Chapter 548 Get Inside
Meanwhile, at the military base.
The ground beneath the entire compound had sprouted countless “legs“, lifting the whole- structure upward.
From above, the base rocked and swayed violently, but no matter how hard it shook, it didn’t collapse..
The design used an ancient Caswana architectural trick. Once raised, the whole building “floated” on its base, tough enough to survive a magnitude–11 quake.
Back in ancient times, lots of gazebos, historic sites, and even the palace museum used this method. That was why they had lasted thousands of years.
Even when the paint faded and the wood rotted away, they remained upright. They swayed through storms and seasons, but never collapsed.
The concept was simple–spread out the force. The building’s motion absorbed seismic energy, turning what would be a weakness into a strength. It was a brilliant invention by the ancients.
So aside from rocking like crazy, the base was completely fine.
Inside, though, civilians were terrified.
People clung to each other, crying and panicking.
The soldiers, however, were cool and collected.
Francis, for example, was staring at a photo even as the building shook.
He even grabbed Alger and said, “Check out Kay’s enlistment photo. Doesn’t she look badass? Think we’d look good together?”
He didn’t care about the scar on her face. He had one too, just smaller, from battle.
Looking at the photo, he could tell she was strong–willed. The more he looked, the more he liked her.
He’d even contacted the frontline team and asked their captain about her thoughts.
Her answer was straightforward–no mood for romance.

That left Francis moody for days. He’d planned to get Caroline to play matchmaker,
Then the earthquake hit.
Alger ran around, not even glancing at Francis.

“Perfect match,” he tossed over, though it sounded more like he wanted to spit in Francis‘ face.
Seeing how busy Alger was, Francis figured he couldn’t slack off anymore. He sighed, put the photo away, and got to work.
Sweat dripped down Alger’s forehead as he noticed Francis‘ calm smile.
After nearly losing his balance, Alger steadied himself against a wall. “How are you not freaking
out?”
He leaned in closer and whispered, “They say the harder it shakes, the less likely it is to collapse. But I don’t feel any better.”
Francis tapped Alger’s chest. “If you had orders to find a partner in two months, you’d realize everything else in life doesn’t matter.”
Alger didn’t bother replying. He went back to calming terrified civilians.
Meanwhile, Francis led the soldiers around, checking circuits and supply points to prevent accidents.
And honestly, the base was built solidly. Even with all the shaking, it hadn’t fallen apart.
But just like Caroline’s side, the second wave caused cracks to form.
Slowly, those cracks extended to within dozens of feet of the base, getting closer by the second
If someone could hover over Hornvale or even look down from high above all of Caswana, they’d see the land torn apart, as if massive claws had raked it.
Fractures ran across the ground in every direction, spreading fast, like smooth skin tearing
open.
And the cracks only grew bigger.
When Caroline rushed outside, the shaking felt stronger than ever.
Rocks were falling from the sky.
