Kay and Francis both looked like they had just been pulled out of a pool.
They were soaked with sweat from head to toe. Caroline quickly grabbed a few buckets and filled them with ice. She set them nearby to cool the two down the old–fashioned way.
“Why didn’t you send someone to get me carlic Look how overheated you are.”
She looked at Kay and felt a tight ache in her chest.
Kay had always been like this. No matter what happened, she kept it to herself.
If she could endure it, she would. She hated bothering others, even a little.
“It’s fine,” Kay said. “I thought it would be fixed soon. I didn’t expect it to take this long.”
Even as she spoke, her hands never stopped working.
Francis sat right down on the floor and kept tinkering with a generator.
There were two other people in the room as well, both professional repair workers. Kay and Francis identified the problems and faulty parts, then handed the work over to them.
The workers replaced the parts one by one.
“Several units are already back online,” Francis explained while wiping his sweat.
“We used them for the kitchen freezers first and for some of the lights on the outer defenses. That’s why it still looks like the base doesn’t have power yet.”
But honestly, Francis was trying to stall this.
He’d fiddle with the machine for a bit, then sneak another look at Kay. His eyes were practically glued to her.
Caroline almost wanted to scold him for being so hopeless.
But then Caroline thought about it again. He was a man in his thirties, still single and hopeless. Being a little hopeless actually felt pretty normal.
After asking Kay about what had happened between her and Matt, Caroline learned that Kay already knew the whole truth. She just didn’t explain much.
Still, the slight crease in Kay’s brow said enough. This wasn’t simple.

Kay said she could handle it herself and told Caroline not to worry. She finally relaxes.
The duck mask was being kept in Kay’s room for now.
“Caroline,” Kay said, “Francis called me over so suddenly carlier that I didn’t have time to return it to you. If you’re free, you can grab it from my room yourself” She handed Caroline her room key.
Caroline nodded softly.
After saying goodbye to Kay and Francis, she decided to stop by Kay’s room first, get the duck mask back, and then return to her own room to rest.
Anything else could wait until tomorrow.
But just as she picked up the mask and was about to head back, she felt it. Someone was watching her.
She turned around. Behind her stood a man with a sleazy face, he was staring at her.
“So you’re Caroline?” he said as he walked closer. “You’re the one who bullied my sister and my niece?”
His expression was hostile.
Caroline frowned. She hadn’t expected that woman to have a brother in the base.
The man kept walking forward, flexing his fists as he moved.
Fine grains of sand slipped through his fingers.
An ability user. And if Caroline wasn’t mistaken, it was an attack–type ability.
As he stepped closer, three more men quickly emerged from the shadows behind him.
They looked similar, clearly siblings.
“So what if you’re an ice attack ability user? You think you’re special?” As he spoke, a fireball formed in his hand. “Do you even know what ice is afraid of? Heat. Today, we brothers will teach you a lesson!”
Three minutes later, all three men were sprawled on the ground.
Doors along the hallway cracked open.

People peeked out to watch Someone even shouted, “Good job!”
It was easy to tell these brothers had bullied their neighbors plenty of times before.

“So that woman didn’t just have her husband backing her up,” someone muttered. “No wonder she’s always been so arrogant.”
Caroline coldly kicked one of the men.
Instead of feeling ashamed, the men started yelling at her, throwing out one insult after another.
The same insulting words, over and over, without end. Caroline had only used her ice ability to attack.
She didn’t even need her other powers to deal with them.
Because of that, the men thought she was strong but not unbeatable. Some of them were even considering calling Alaric back to get revenge.
Caroline was about to fire back with a few sharp words and maybe teach them another lesson, when she heard loud scratching from inside her room. Then came heavy banging sounds. Bang. Bang. Bang.
Caroline suddenly remembered Jet from earlier that afternoon. The furious, sulking Jet.
A slow smile curved her lips. She looked at the three men still lying there yelling. “You’re done. I’ve got someone who’s excellent at talking”
She stepped aside, pulled out her key, unlocked her door, and let Jet out.
