Because they were mutants, it took only a day or two for the baby pandas to grow a thin layer of fur. One of them clearly had cyan–colored fu It had likely inherited its mother’s cyan
energy
The other three were normal black and white. It was still unknown whether they had developed any mutant abilities.
The moment Caroline stepped into the room, the little ones started screaming at the top of their lungs.
The sound wasn’t pleasant at all; it was more like mice squeaking.
But as she walked closer, she noticed something shocking. All of them had opened their eyes.
Their eyes were tiny but bright and alert. They stared straight at Caroline, as if they were looking at their meal ticket.
As the “meal ticket” came close.
shout their throats raw.
the babies screamed even louder, as if they were about to
Caroline hurried over and began feeding them one by one with a bottle.
Who would’ve guessed that while one was drinking, another would crawl over to steal its share?
Two tiny bodies bumped and shoved each other squeezing hard.
They acted like being one second late would mean starving to death. Caroline had locked Raven and Jet inside the house. They didn’t take part in the fight between the mother and daughter. Now Jet flapped his wings angrily, cursing nonstop, clearly upset he’d missed the action.
“Unbelievable! I was yelling in that room the whole time! Human, didn’t you hear me? You should’ve opened the door and let me out! I would’ve scolded them so hard they’d never dare talk trash again! That nasty woman!”
The more Jet talked, the more worked up he became, like he was trying to make up for missing the verbal war.
Caroline fed the milk with one hand and used the other to gently rub a baby panda’s head. “Alright, alright. Next time, I’ll definitely send our Jet into battle.”
She said it with a grin.

It was just a joke. Who would’ve guessed she’d actually need to keep that promise later that night
While feeding the baby pandas. Caroline quietly thought about everything that had happened over the past few days, especially Shane’s situation.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that the man Shane mentioned was a key piece of the puzzle.
Shane’s sudden appearance and disappearance, her gaining cyan abilities, and now this sandstorm.
Everything felt deeply wrong.
She even felt an urge to meet that man.
A strong instinct told her that doing so might greatly help end this apocalypse.
After finishing the feeding, Caroline went to look for Kay.
Outside, the sandstorm was still raging. The army had temporarily sealed the base gates. No one was allowed to leave without permission.
The base had also lost power. Most people stayed inside their homes, afraid to come out.
With no electrical devices, everyone moved in the dark. Many people had nothing to do and simply went to sleep.
As Caroline walked through the base, she heard snoring everywhere, rising and falling one after another.
After nightfall, it wasn’t as hot as during the day, but the temperature was still close to 104°F. Sleeping wasn’t comfortable, but there was no better choice.
Not sleeping was even worse.
Caroline asked a few soldiers about Kay, but none of them knew where she was.
When she ran into Alger, though, he smiled in a mysterious way. “Kay? She seems to be with the colonel. They’ve been busy together since the afternoon. Speaking of how shameless the colonel is…”
As he spoke, Alger held his hands flat, pushed them forward, then bent them sharply.
Caroline asked in confusion, “What does that mean?”
“Thicker than a city wall! At least three feet thick.

Caroline’s mouth twitched. Strangely enough, the description fit.
Following Alger’s directions. Caroline found Kay and Francis.
They were busy with base maintenance, in the middle of fixing the generators.
The generators had been damaged when the tornado hit earlier.

Caroline finally realized it wasn’t minor damage. Not a single generator in the entire power room still worked.
Francis explained that when the tornado swept through, the power room suffered a massive electrical surge. It took out every generator at once.
“Well, great. Looks like no one’s sleeping tonight Francis said as he wiped sweat from his face. He sounded like he was complaining, but the smile he gave Kay told a different story. Spending the whole night together in the same room didn’t seem so bad to him.
Kay’s ability happened to be related to electricity, so staying here helped Francis locate the damage.
When she saw Caroline arrive, Kay turned and smiled. “Caroline, you should go back to your apartment. It’s too hot here.”
The power room was cramped, with no ventilation at all. It was hotter than outside, easily over 113°F.
