Chapter 618 Pay the Price

Now that these people had messed with Caroline, everyone watching had shared one thought in their heads. Serves you right. You mess with the wrong people!
A few onlookers quietly slipped away. Only two people stayed behind to watch the show.
Caroline looked around and felt it was enough. She never planned to really ruin these people. This was a base, after all. There were rules. She had power, but she wasn’t someone who abused it. She liked to keep things reasonable.
“You can leave,” she said with a gentle smile, “after each of you pays compensation.”
Her smile looked harmless, but her logic was simple. If those people dared to look for trouble, she would make them pay a high price and make sure they would not dare to cross her again.
The three men were completely stunned. They had already been beaten, yelled at, and scared out of their minds by that big black dog. One of them had even wet their pants. And now, after all that, they still had to pay the demoness who hurt them? It felt unreal.
But no matter what Caroline said now, they didn’t dare argue.
So they asked, shaking with fear, what kind of compensation she wanted.
That question actually made Caroline pause for a second.
“One hundred cans per person,” she said calmly. “If you don’t have that many cans, you can trade with items of equal value. Mutant animal corpses are fine too. I’m pretty flexible. I won’t make things too hard for you.”
She smiled again.
“One hundred cans?!” The lecherous–looking man who had shown up first shouted right away.
“That’s robbery! How could we possibly have that many?!”
Before he could say another word, the big black dog shot him a sharp warning look. And the fat bird on the dog’s head immediately fired back with a long stream of harsh insults, one after another, without stopping.
The three men shut up at once.
But they didn’t lie. They didn’t have 100 cans each. That was 300 cans total!

Even if the three of them pooled everything together, they still wouldn’t have 100 cans.
The only reason they acted so arrogant in the base was because of their brother–in–law, Alaric Barker, backing them up.
But even Alaric, no matter how trusted he was by the army, only earned about 90 cans a month.
And he had only been around for two months. After he used some of it for himself, he only gave them maybe 60 cans at most.
Three hundred cans were more than three months of Alaric’s salary.
As for them? All of them had jobs, but none were skilled positions. The best monthly pay among them was the second brother, Dacre Glover, who only received 30 cans for a month.
The other two were paid in compressed biscuits.
Three hundred cans were enough to ruin their lives.
“What?” Caroline asked coldly.
“Trying to back out?”
An ice blade had already formed in her hand. It felt like the moment they said “yes,” she would end them on the spot.
The sleazy man clenched his teeth and shouted, “No! No backing out! We’ll find a way!”
What way did he have? Borrowing from their sister, Brittany Glover, and borrowing the rest from others.
With no choice left, he walked over and knocked on Brittany’s door.
Truth was, Brittany had been listening the whole time. She even cracked the door open a few times to peek outside.
But she didn’t dare come out. When all three of her brothers had been beaten up, all she could do was hide.
Now that her oldest brother, Charlton Glover, was knocking, she wanted to pretend she wasn’t home.
But then Charlton shouted from outside, “Brittany, you heartless witch! You called us to stand up for you. Things went wrong, and you hide inside? What? You don’t care if your brothers live

After he finished yelling, the other two men joined in. All three of them pounded on the door hard, like they wanted to smash it down.
Inside the room, that terrified little girl curled up on the floor, crying loudly.
She had heard everything. She heard her uncles say they had to pay 300 cans as compensation.
On a normal day, Brittany only let herself eat one can at most.
Three hundred cans? That was almost a whole year of food for her.
A year without canned food. That sounded like a nightmare.

Her cries echoed through the room.
Brittany ground her teeth in anger and misery. She felt like she was cursed with the worst luck.
Her head wound hadn’t even healed yet. Then her ungrateful little brat had scratched her face
raw.
And now the child wouldn’t stop screaming, making it impossible for her to think straight.
