Chapter 622 Racing Hearts
Kay spoke in a calm, gentle voice. “It’s okay. Let’s keep going.”

In that instant, the fire in Francis’s chest and head went out, like water thrown on flames.
All that remained was his heart pounding fast in his chest.
Kay did not look at him. She turned back to the generator in front of her and got to work.
Before the apocalypse, Kay trained in sports. Later, she became a yoga instructor. That life gave her a strong and steady mind. When the apocalypse came, she joined the army. Her foundation was weak, and she was a woman. She started later than most people.
She gritted her teeth and pushed forward step by step. Along the way, she had lost count of how many times she thought success was right in front of her, only to be slammed back down again.
Kay was used to it now.
Clench your teeth. It’s fine. Keep going.
Don’t think about anything. Just do it.
This had become Kay’s way of life.
She did not know that, as she bent slightly and worked in silence, she looked so bright in the eyes of others.
Caroline woke up as the ground shook again.
She looked out the window and froze. Another tornado.
Her brows pulled together. This sudden sandstorm felt wrong.
In her memories of her previous life, there had been no sandstorms.
Crow had never mentioned them either.
And a tornado made even less sense.
There wasn’t that much sand near Hornvale. Dust blowing in from the northwest once in a while was normal.

But a full tornado? That was not normal.
Caroline had only slept for two hours.
She was tired, but her mind was sharp and clear.
After thinking it through, a sense of danger crept over her.
She opened the Zero System at once and reviewed all her abilities.

She removed the useless ones. After careful selection, only a little over 30 abilities remained.
Most of the removed abilities were low–level and weak. Some had the same effect.
Now, three abilities could appear at random each day, with three refreshes. If she was lucky, she could see up to 12 options.
That made it much easier to get what she needed.
Even though she could not get the exact ability she wanted, she would still get something close enough to use.
It was different than before, when danger hit and every refresh gave her nothing but trash abilities, leaving her frustrated and stuck.
The base was still shaking. This time, the tornado stayed longer than before.
Still, after just a few minutes, it moved on.
Silence fell over the base again.
Most people drifted back to sleep. Some soldiers moved through the base, checking for damage.
Caroline could not fall asleep anymore.
Just then, she heard a door open and close in the next room.
Caroline’s room was in the middle.
Nelson was on one side, Tyler on the other. Farther out was Denton.
Kay had not been given a room earlier. She stayed in the army’s guest quarters, farther away.
Caroline pushed open her door and knocked on Tyler’s door.

What she did not expect was Tyler answering the door, without a shirt.

His beautiful muscles were fully on display. A towel hung around his neck, like he had just stepped out of the shower.
He wore a boxer on his lower half, pulled on in a hurry. There were some wet spots on the fabric.
Below the boxer, his long, straight legs showed clearly.
Tyler had the kind of body people were born lucky with.
No matter how he trained, his muscles never grew bulky. They stayed smooth, tight, and well- shaped.
Caroline had seen his abs many times before. Eight of them. Clear and defined.
Most people only ever had six.
Only a rare few were built for eight.
Those people looked stronger at the waist, more balanced.
Tyler was one of them. His calves were just as impressive. Perfect lines, no extra bulk, yet clearly powerful.
Caroline had seen him leap into the air before. His calf muscles tensed and released like springs, launching him upward.
Without realizing it, her face warmed.
Tyler asked calmly, “What’s wrong?”
In truth, his heart was racing wildly.
He had just come back covered in sand. Without thinking, he had gone straight to shower.
Tyler had barely rinsed off when he heard someone knocking.
At this hour, he assumed it was Denton, who had just left him. So, he pulled on his boxers and went to answer the door.
