Caroline touched her face. It was burning hot.

Tyler pressed a hand to his chest. His heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might jump out.
Early the next morning, Caroline looked out the window at the dull, gray sky and sighed. Whether this sandstorm was caused by an ability or not, it clearly wasn’t ending in a day or
two.
After half a night of work, the base’s power system was finally back online.
The lights were on inside, making the room much brighter than the world outside.
The air conditioner was running again too. The room was no longer stuffy, and everything felt much better.
She thought of Francis and Kay. They must have worked all night to fix the power. Who knew if something had sparked between them?
At that moment, both of them were asleep.
Francis was out cold, sleeping like a log. A faint smile rested on his face, and every so often, he even laughed in his sleep.
If someone were standing next to him, they might have slapped him. What kind of sweet dream was he having, huh? So jealous of him.
Kay, on the other hand, lay quietly on the bed. She hadn’t even taken off her clothes. It was clear she was completely exhausted.
Her brows were tightly knit, as if she couldn’t fully relax even in her sleep.
Caroline knew none of this. She washed up, fed the two little ones breakfast, and then hurried to feed the hungry baby pandas.
She had gotten up several times during the night to feed them. The little guys ate a lot, but they grew fast too.
In just one night, they already looked bigger.
After a simple breakfast, Caroline headed to the lower animal area. She planned to bring a small gift to the mother panda.

The bamboo shoots had been prepared earlier. She just hadn’t had time to go down yesterday. Between all the chaos and taking care of the four baby pandas the mother panda had abandoned, she never made it.
When Caroline reached the stairs, a soldier came running up in a panic, shouting as he ran, “Trouble! This is bad! The mother panda has gone crazy!”
Caroline’s heart sank. She rushed forward, grabbed the soldier’s arm, and asked urgently, “What’s wrong with her?”
The soldier’s face was pale. When he saw it was Caroline, he hurriedly explained, “She suddenly started attacking her cubs. She picked one up and slammed it on the ground. When we tried to stop her, she attacked us instead. You know she has an ability…”
Caroline didn’t wait to hear the rest. She let go of him and ran downstairs as fast as she could.
The mother panda must have been completely drained from nursing four cubs. She was trying to kill her babies and eat them to regain her strength.
Caroline was frantic. She didn’t know if the cubs had already been killed or eaten.
Her emotions were tangled.
In the apocalypse, Caroline had seen life and death too many times.
The mother panda had given birth to eight cubs. The four cubs in Caroline’s care were all alive. That alone was already a blessing.
In a litter of eight, losing a few was not unusual.
After feeding those round, adorable little cubs for days, she had grown attached to them.
There was no way she wanted the mother panda to kill her babies.
When Caroline rushed down, two soldiers were already fighting the mother panda using their abilities. The soldier who ran upstairs had gone to get a tranquilizer gun.
The two soldiers were being thrown around by the enraged mother panda.
Wind–type abilities had a strong advantage.
They could be used for attack, defense, or even like blades.
Just look at Francis when he first awakened–he was pure destruction.

The mother panda was using her ability carefully, keeping the soldiers from getting close. Their abilities couldn’t counter hers, which made her extremely hard to deal with.
Caroline arrived just in time to see both soldiers knocked to the ground. The mother panda lifted a cub–dead or alive, it was impossible to tell–and raised it toward her mouth.
Caroline shouted loudly, “Wait!”
She really wanted to yell something silly like “spare the cub,” but this wasn’t the time for jokes.
The mother panda froze.
Caroline rushed over. As she helped the soldiers up, she held out fresh bamboo shoots toward the panda. “Look,” Caroline said gently. “See what I brought you. Something good to eat.”
It had only been a few days, but Caroline was shocked. The mother panda was painfully thin.
Nearby lay half–chewed carrots and several pieces of panda bread.
In the apocalypse, panda bread was a rare and valuable food. The army truly cared about this panda.
