Early the next morning, Caroline looked out the window at the dull, gray sky and sighed. Whether this sandstorm was caused by an ability or not, it clearly wasn’t ending in a day or

two.

After half a night of work, the base’s power system was finally back online.

The lights were on inside, making the room much brighter than the world outside.

The air conditioner was running again too. The room was no longer stuffy, and everything felt much better.

She thought of Francis and Kay. They must have worked all night to fix the power. Who knew if something had sparked between them?

At that moment, both of them were asleep.

Francis was out cold, sleeping like a log. A faint smile rested on his face, and every so often, he even laughed in his sleep.

Caroline rushed over. As she helped the soldiers up, she held out fresh bamboo shoots toward the panda. “Look,” Caroline said gently. “See what I brought you. Something good to eat.”

It had only been a few days, but Caroline was shocked. The mother panda was painfully thin.

Nearby lay half–chewed carrots and several pieces of panda bread.

In the apocalypse, panda bread was a rare and valuable food. The army truly cared about this panda.
