Nester stood under the hospital hallway's harsh white lights, gripping his phone as he repeatedly dialed a number he knew by heart.
"Sorry. The number you've dialed is unavailable…"
"Sorry. The number you've dialed is unavailable…"
The cold, automated female voice sounded like the harshest verdict and constantly hammered against his eardrums.
He hung up in irritation and dialed again. The cycle repeated endlessly.
His fingers trembled slightly from the force of his grip. The back of his hand was still marked with scabbed-over cuts from shards of crystal of the fallen chandelier.
He wanted to explain and tell Sabrina that in that split second on the balcony, Della had been closer to him. Since she had stretched out her hand, he had reacted on instinct and pure reflex.
By the time he realized what he had done and tried to pull Sabrina up, she had let go and plunged downward.
"Nester…"
The door to the examination room opened. The pale Della stepped out with a small bandage wrapped around her right forearm to cover a light scrape.
The moment she saw Nester, her eyes reddened. She immediately threw herself into his arms, and her body shook slightly. "I was so scared, Nester. I honestly thought I was going to die.
"Has Sabrina lost her mind? Did she try to kill me? Why did she grab me and pull me down with her?"
Nester stiffened slightly as she clung to him. Looking at her, he asked in a low, deep voice, "Tell me the truth. What exactly happened back then?"
Della was briefly stunned by his abrupt question. Her eyes briefly flicked away, then welled up with aggrieved tears.
"I-I just talked to her for a bit, but she suddenly snapped, grabbed my wrist, and tried to jump off the balcony!
"I clung to the railing for dear life, yet she wouldn't stop dragging me down. She wanted both of us to die together!"
Nester said nothing. He remained staring at her with a sharp gaze, as if trying to see through her. "I'll ask you one last time, Della. Tell me the truth.
"Did she push you first, or did you say or do anything before that?"
His voice was calm, yet carried a chilling intensity.
Under his gaze, Della panicked and instinctively avoided his eyes. Her voice weakened to a murmur. "I didn't say anything…"
