Chapter 128

Hope’s POV

I pinched myself just to see if I was dreaming. However, my damp clothes sitting on top of the washer were proof that everything that happened last night had been real. Every single second of it.

I buried my face in a pillow and screamed into it, kicking my legs against the mattress like a teenage girl drunk on giddiness.

Oh my gosh. What was happening to me?

I quickly washed my face and dabbed a little tint onto my lips. Normally, I didn’t really care how I looked, but Levi was here.

Was I actually going crazy?

I made sure I looked presentable enough before heading out of my room. The moment I stepped into the hallway, it felt like fate had been waiting for me. The door at the end of the hall opened at the exact same time, revealing Levi.

I stopped in my tracks.

He stopped too.

For a few long seconds, we simply stared at each other, unable to hide the smiles spreading across our faces. Neither of us said a word, but it felt really comfortable. Like seeing him first thing in the morning was exactly how my day was supposed to begin.

Unfortunately, the moment didn’t last.

“Are you two just going to stand there making lovey-dovey eyes at each other all day or what?”

I pursed my lips and nearly cursed Harley under my breath.

Seriously.

He really had a gift for ruining every romantic moment, didn’t he?

“I smell Mom’s cooking,” he continued as he walked past Levi. “Don’t make out too much.”

He disappeared downstairs, leaving just the two of us in the hallway again.

I glared in the direction he’d gone before turning back to Levi.

“Hi, I muttered, suddenly shy.

“Hi, he replied, his smile somehow growing even softer.

I pursed my lips, unable to think of anything else to say.

I still couldn’t believe he was here. In my childhood home. The place where I’d spent most of my life. Unable to stop myself. I reached over and wrapped my fingers around his arm.

The moment I touched him, my eyes widened.

“Oh gosh.” I breathed.

“What?”

“You’re hot today.”

His brows lifted.

“I’m offended, Hope. Am I not hot every day for you?”

I rolled my eyes and lightly smacked his chest.

“I meant literally, Levi.”

He laughed quietly.

“You’re burning up.” My smile slowly faded into concern. “You’re really not used to getting soaked in the rain, are you? Harley and I used to play outside during rainstorms all the time, but your body probably isn’t used to that

I searched his face carefully.

“Are you really okay?”

He smiled reassuringly.

“You don’t have to worry, Hope. I’m fine.”

I wasn’t convinced.

I rested a finger beneath my chin, thinking.

“I was planning to send you off today, but if you’re sick-

He interrupted me.

“Send me off?”

I nodded innocently.

“Yeah. You have a next game, right? You’re still with the Glaciers.”

He didn’t answer.

I narrowed my eyes.

“Don’t tell me you terminated your contract.”

“I didn’t!”he said quickly. “If I had, it would’ve been all over the news.”

“That’s true,” I admitted, thoughtfully tapping my chin.

His fingers slowly slipped around my hands.

“Aren’t we… together now?” he asked quietly.

I looked at him and nodded slowly.

“So, why would you be sending me off?”

My cheeks warmed.

“We are together now,” I admitted softly, unable to stop smiling.

“But that doesn’t mean you have to abandon your career.”

I squeezed his hands gently.

“I’ll come watch the next game after this one. I promise.”

I smiled.

“I’ve already been hired here for a month here, so I just can’t leave, Levi.”

Before he could answer, a fit of coughing suddenly escaped him. The sound echoed through the hallway.

“Levi?”

He shook his head before leaning against me, and the warmth radiating from him felt unlike the Levi I knew.

“No,” he muttered weakly. “I suddenly feel really dizzy.”

He rested more of his weight against me.

“I’ve actually been feeling under the weather this past week.”

I finally took a proper look at him.

Now that I wasn’t distracted by seeing him first thing in the morning, I noticed the faint shadows beneath his eyes.

I reached up and gently cupped his cheek.

“Does something hurt?” I asked quietly.

He nodded against my palm.

“Yeah.”

“I don’t think I can drive back… or even play like this.”

Concern filled my chest.

“But what about your team?”
