Levi’s POV

I was nervous. There was no other explanation. I felt even more nervous than I did before my games in the league.
Why wouldn’t I be when my lover’s parents were sitting right in front of me?
“Let’s eat,” her mom said, breaking the silence.
I nodded and looked at the array of food in front of me, and I couldn’t help but feel pleasant. Since when was the last time I had eaten a warm, home-cooked meal like this?
A while, that is.
Hope placed some food onto my plate, and somehow, that simple gesture made the warmth settle even deeper in my chest. The moment I took a bite, I couldn’t stop the smile that found its way onto my lips.
However, I felt the sensation of being watched, so I lifted my head and was met with Hope’s father’s unwavering gaze. The food nearly got stuck in my throat, and I unconsciously straightened under the weight of his stare.
“Where are our manners?” her mom suddenly said, placing down her utensils.
“Allow me to introduce ourselves. My name is Hannah, and this is my husband, Jerry.”
I cleared my throat and stood, bowing deeply to them. I could feel Hope’s and Harley’s eyes on me, but I held the bow for a long moment as a sign of respect for her parents.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
I straightened and returned to my seat.
“Thank you for letting me stay here, and pardon me for not being able to bring a gift. I should have come more prepared. I’ll be sure to have more manners next time.”
Silence settled over the table for a brief moment before Harley let out a chuckle. Hannah smiled at me too, while Hope looked at me with what I could only assume was fondness, and it made my racing heart calm just a little.
“You don’t have to be so formal,” Hannah said with a kind smile. Now I know where Hope got her smile from.
“It’s alright.”
“He’s going to be staying with us for a while, if that’s okay, Mom. He’s sick and needs to recover,” Hope explained.
“Sick?” Harley suddenly interjected.
He looked at me with amusement while I gave him what I hoped were pleading eyes. I honestly had no idea what expression I was making.
He looked even more amused.
Well, I had a little cold, but it wasn’t that bad. I was honestly in the best shape of my life, body-wise, because I hadn’t been training and overloading myself with work every single day.
However, I wanted to stay here for a little longer with Hope.
Fortunately, Hannah seemed perfectly alright with it. However, Jerry still looked apprehensive about my presence. Every time I accidentally met his gaze, I couldn’t help but straighten my spine.

He hadn’t said anything either, somehow making me feel even more nervous.
“Are you heading to work today?” Harley suddenly asked.
“Yes,” Hope said. “I have to go four days a week until the end of the month. It’s good, too.”

I felt a little disappointed that I wouldn’t have Hope all to myself, but I immediately scolded myself for thinking that because she was doing this for herself, and I wanted to support her no matter what.
“Then…”
“No, Lee,” Hope said right off the bat. “You can’t go play hockey with Levi. He’s still sick.”
Harley pursed his lips and turned to me.
I was about to open my mouth, about to tell him that I could play with him, but Hope’s next words rendered me speechless.
“If you can play here, you should head back and play with the Glaciers.”
That shut me up real quick, and I cast Harley an apologetic look.
“Then,” he began again excitedly, but Hope cut him off once more.
“No, you can’t take him to go see your friends. Aside from the fact that he’s sick, like I said, it would also create chaos if they found out he’s staying here. Let’s keep his identity on the down low for now, okay?”
Hope then turned to me with a soft smile, the same smile that I had never been able to say no to.
“Don’t let yourself get found out, okay?”
“Okay.” I said in the end without another argument.
“Down bad,” Harley coughed, but I couldn’t deny it.
I was down bad.
“Anyway, I have to get ready. I’ll walk to the center today. The weather’s nice.”
Hannah also stood.
“I’ll come with you. Lynn needed some help baking cookies for her son’s birthday.”
Hope nodded, and at that moment, I wanted to protest.
We were going to be left alone-me, Harley, and her dad.
Harley and I had talked about hockey overnight, and I could say that we were pretty close now, but his father was a different story.
The man barely spoke, yet somehow, his silence alone made me feel like I was sitting in front of a coach much scarier than Coach Dennis.
I pursed my lips when it was just the three of us.
Harley sighed and looked at the table.
“Guess I have to wash the dishes.”
He began collecting the dishes, but Jerry stopped him.

“Let the guest wash the dishes.”
Harley and I both turned to Jerry, who looked serious.
