In the back of my mind, I knew that was a reality I had to face. However, it seemed I had gotten so caught up in the comforting illusion that he was here, right beside me, that a foolish part of me had started believing he was going to stay here forever. As if time had stopped and Manhattan no longer existed.
“Wait, Hope. Not like that,” he suddenly said, making me snap out of my thoughts.
“Hmm?” I looked at him and smiled. “No, it’s okay. I understand. Your life is out there in Manhattan. I’ll go back, too… someday, when I land a job.”
He sighed, and then before I knew it, I was no longer in my seat but on his lap. His driver’s seat had already been pushed all the way back, giving him enough room to pin me in place. My eyes widened, and I instinctively looked around.
“Levi,” I muttered, my face burning with embarrassment. The windows of the car weren’t tinted, and we were still parked within the vicinity of my current workplace.
“Someone might see.”
“You won’t listen to me until I do this one.”
“I’m just going back for a bit,” he said quietly. “They need me to play in the semis.”
Somehow, hearing him say that he’d be playing in the next game made everything feel better.
“Really?” I exclaimed, my eyes lighting up. “That’s great! Are you going to be playing up until the finals?”
“There’s nothing certain yet. However, I’ll be heading back tomorrow morning to sort everything out. The game is in two days, which means….”
“You won’t be able to go to the reunion,” I finished for him with a smile. Before he could interrupt me or apologize, I shook my head.
“It’s fine, Levi. Really.” I ran my fingers through his hair while he closed his eyes, quietly savoring the feeling.
“Don’t be pressured to play well. Just play like you always do. And don’t even think about the reunion.”
He opened his eyes and smiled reassuringly.
“I’m going to make it.”
My brows shot up.
“What? Why?” I asked in disbelief. “It’s a seven-hour drive, Levi. You said the game is in two days. You have to rest after your game. Not to mention you’re going to be driving from here, too. You won’t have enough time

to settle everything. Don’t mind the others-”
He interrupted me by placing a gentle kiss on my lips.
I pursed my lips when we separated and stared at him.
:
“I’m going,” he said firmly. “No one can stop me. I might just be a little bit late.”
I pouted, and he leaned in to steal another quick kiss.
“I still think you should rest, though. Or stay there until the finals.”

“There’s no certainty that I would be playing in the finals,” he said. “And it wouldn’t be for another week after the semis anyway, so I have some time.”
“Wait, why isn’t it certain?” I asked.
He didn’t respond right away, and that made me narrow my eyes at him.
“There’s something going on with Margaret, huh?”
He remained silent.
“Don’t lie, Levi. I can tell… just like how you could tell something was wrong with me before.”
He let out another sigh before finally nodding.
“I’m still with the Glaciers. She’s just not letting me play. But she’s letting me go back for this game. I’ll have to hear what she has to say.”
“Do I have to do anything?” I asked, biting my lip anxiously.
I caught the way his eyes darkened for the briefest second before they softened again, returning to their usual warmth.
“You don’t have to do anything except sit still and look pretty.” He smiled faintly. “I’ll be back in no time.”
I searched his eyes, looking for even the smallest hint of uncertainty, but all I found was confidence,
So I chose to trust him.
With that, I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and buried my face against his neck, inhaling his familiar scent as if I could somehow keep a piece of him with me while he was away.
It was actually ridiculous that he would only be gone for a little less than three days, yet it already felt like I was going to miss him so much that my chest ached just thinking about it.
I also knew that car sex was something I would never even consider, especially considering the fact that we
were in my dad’s old, beat-up car. However, with the thought of him leaving lingering in my mind, a reckless little voice whispered that maybe-just this once-I wanted to give it a try.

However, before I could entertain the thought any further, he effortlessly lifted me once again and gently placed me back in the passenger seat. He leaned over, reached for the seatbelt, and carefully fastened it around me before giving my cheek a light pat.
“Let’s go home. Your mom and I baked some cookies.”
I pursed my lips and finally nodded.
