“So predictable.”
Connor turned to me with a satisfied smirk. He wiped the sweat that had formed on his forehead, but honestly, he didn’t need to.
How could someone break a sweat doing absolutely nothing?
I stood from the bench and glanced at him.
He looked so satisfied that he didn’t even realize everything was going exactly according to plan.
I just didn’t think he would leave such a huge gap.
I glanced toward the tunnel, and I saw her there too-Margaret—already looking like she was on the verge of panicking.
I shook my head. If they were going to scheme against me, they should have at least been on the same side. They didn’t even realize they were working against each other.
How did this even happen?
A day before, back at Margaret’s office…
“Are we going to keep wasting time?” I asked with a smirk, leaning back against the chair. “Isn’t that what you hate doing the most?”
Margaret sighed and shook her head. “I can’t believe this,” she muttered under her breath, but I still heard every word.
She gestured for Beth to speak, and I guessed her pride simply couldn’t take explaining it herself, especially after putting on such a strong front that the team could do just as well—if not better-without me.
Beth cleared her throat and began.
“Tomorrow is the semifinal game against the Edmonton Dreams. One loss, and we’re out of the league. We’re aiming for a fifth championship because it has never been done before. Four consecutive championships have been achieved by other teams, but if we win five, the Glaciers franchise will stand at the very top.”
Beth glanced uneasily at Margaret. It seemed she was reading straight from the script Margaret had prepared.
“This is a game we can’t afford to lose. So… Margaret has a proposal for the two of you.”
“Let’s hear it,” I said. I glanced at Connor, and he looked just as intrigued.
Beth cleared her throat again.

“The Dreams have been unbeatable until now, so momentum is also on their side. Given our current situation, defeating them will be difficult. To raise the team’s morale, Margaret has decided to place a bet between the two of you.”
I remained silent, letting her continue.
My eyes stayed on Margaret, who was glaring at the surface of her desk, refusing to look at me.
A bet?
What could she possibly come up with now?
“Tomorrow, you’ll be playing in different periods. The two of you will compete to see who finishes with the higher score. Connor will play first, and Levi will follow.”
Just then, Connor stood and glared at me.
“Isn’t that unfair? In the first period, the opponents are still fresh and at full strength. You want Levi to play after I’ve already worn them down?”
I raised a brow.
He was seriously saying he would wear down the Edmonton Dreams?
His confidence was quite amusing.
Margaret raised a hand and spoke for the first time.
“I’ve considered all the factors. That’s why there will be a handicap for Levi.”
I crossed my arms over my chest.
I wasn’t expecting anything else.
I had wounded her pride before, and Margaret had never been known for showing mercy to anyone who did that. If anything, she made sure their careers ended before they ever had the chance to recover.
The only reason she had called me into her office now was because they were desperate.
The roster couldn’t be changed in the middle of the season, and they didn’t have another consistent center they could rely on besides me.
“First, Connor will play for two periods, so you will have more time to score the goals. Along with that, you will win if you score more goals than Levi… or if the team loses.”
The moment those words left her mouth, I laughed. I couldn’t help it. The whole situation was just too ridiculous.
“In order for Levi to win this bet, he must score more points than Connor, AND the Glaciers must defeat the Dreams,” Margaret continued calmly, as though the conditions weren’t absurdly one-sided.

After she finished, Connor slowly sat back down.
I glanced at the bastard and caught the excitement burning in his eyes.
He was already planning something.
The two of them were just so predictable, weren’t they?
No matter how I looked at it, I was the one at the disadvantage.
“What’s at stake?” I finally asked, lifting my
chin.
“What happens to the one who loses?”

Margaret smirked, her familiar cruelty settling back onto her face.
“We’re scouting new talent for next season, and there isn’t room for one center too many.”
“What’s at stake is your contracts,” she continued. “Whoever wins the bet stays with the Glaciers. Whoever loses… leaves.”
Beth gasped. So she hadn’t known about this either.
Meanwhile, my expression turned serious.
Connor was quick to answer.
“Let’s do it.”
I held back a chuckle.
He knew he was in the perfect position.
He could simply stand there and do nothing, letting the other team score as much as they wanted, making it impossible for us to win. With such an easy task, he can play for the Glaciers for another year.
On the other hand, Margaret wanted Connor to do his absolute best in order to beat me. It was obvious she wanted this championship more than anything.
I looked between Connor and Margaret.
It was obvious they hadn’t planned this together.
Margaret clearly had no idea Connor was willing to stoop low just to secure his victory.
I stood from my seat.
