“Why? Is that wrong? Desmond could like you too. I could tell him later if you want.”

I bit my lip, unable to hide that I was finding him cute despite the terrible advice he had given. The confidence in his voice made it sound so simple. Well, he didn’t know the nuances of Lia’s situation, so I couldn’t blame him entirely.

“I can’t believe Levi has a girlfriend before me,” Aiden said, shaking his head in disappointment.

Levi glared at him while Aiden raised both hands in surrender with a chuckle, looking unapologetic.

“It’s not that simple,” I explained to him. “It’s only Lia who decides whether she wants to tell him or not, no one else.”

“I see,” he muttered, scratching the back of his neck. “Yeah, that’s good. Tell him soon.”

Lia shook her head. “If it were only that simple, but he’s Desmond and I’m me!”

“What’s wrong with you?” I asked, tilting my head to the side. “You’re kind and very pretty.”

“Yeah,” Forest agreed, nodding enthusiastically. “It’s Desmond who has a problem. I understand your hesitation.”

Lia sighed, rubbing her temples. “Let’s not talk about me anymore! Let’s just continue talking about Beth’s new achievement.”

“There’s nothing to talk about,” Beth said with a helpless laugh. “Honestly, there’s a lot to do. We still have the final game, where we’re still aiming for our fifth championship.”

“As expected, we’re going to be playing against the Pucks, and with Coach Dennis, Delaney, and Connor practically on strike, not wanting to cooperate since they know their contracts are ending soon, we have a lot in store for us.”

“Along with that, we have a lot to do after the season. Scouting. New coaches. More PTs. Endorsements! Gosh, the list never ends!”

She looked stressed, and honestly, just thinking about everything piled on her shoulders was enough to make me feel stressed too.

Aiden suddenly stood and placed his hand on her shoulder. I thought he was going to say something comforting, but…

“At least, you have more money now.”

Beth clicked her tongue and shoved him away.

“You’re hopeless.”

Lia stood from the couch. “Let’s take it one step at a time, Beth. For now, let’s just focus on the finals. You have us anyway, and we won’t let you solve all these matters alone.”

I nodded in agreement, and it seemed the others did too, because Beth visibly relaxed. The tension in her shoulders eased, and she looked like she could finally breathe.

However, that relaxation ended almost as quickly as it came when loud banging echoed from the other side of the door.

“Ma’am, you can’t be here without an appointment.”

“Let go of me! Do you know who I am?” the woman exclaimed, her voice exuding power and regality even from behind the door.

“Ma’am, please.”

“Levi, I know you’re in there! Let me in before I do something to these guards!”

My breath caught when I finally recognized the voice behind the door.

I turned to Levi in concern, and his brows were already deeply furrowed.

“Who’s that loud lady?” Aiden asked.

Just then, the door swung open, revealing the woman that I had expected.

Aiden immediately took the initiative to stop her.

“Lady, we’re having an important meeting here. Please leave.”

“Lady?” she snapped, turning sharply toward Aiden.

The latter instinctively stepped back, appearing intimidated.

“Do you want me to ruin your life, young man?”

Levi stood, breaking the tense moment.

“Mom, stop it.”

Aiden looked like he had just pissed his pants.

Even the big and formidable Forest let out a surprised squeak.

Despite feeling just as intimidated, I stood beside Levi and wrapped my hand around his arm, silently giving him my support.

They said it was already a happy ending, but I guessed there were still some doors left open. Doors that would continue to swing open again and again if we didn’t close and lock them properly.

Luisa Moretti looked around the office before slowly shaking her head.

“I can’t believe I came to this place.”

“Then why did you?” Levi snapped.

“Because I had enough of this,” she said with a smirk, crossing her arms over her chest. “You’ve been dilly- dallying for far too long, Levi.”

Her eyes slowly drifted toward me.

Her gaze alone made my heart pound, but I forced myself to keep my head held high despite her overwhelming presence.

“And you’re still here,” she said with a vicious smile. “I guess Levi cares about you more than he cares for his mother because you’ve been sticking around for quite a while.”

“Don’t start now,” Levi said.

I felt his hand gently squeeze my arm.

“Can you leave us alone for a moment?”

“Are you sure?” I softly asked.

He reached over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear before giving me a small nod and an even smaller smile.

“Yeah. I’ll meet you later in the rehab room.”

I nodded silently and slowly let go of him.

“Aww,” Luisa said, placing a hand over her heart with exaggerated delight. “What a sweet scene. Must be good to be young and in love, huh?”

Her smile widened.

“But it won’t last very long.”

A chill crawled down my spine.
