Levi’s POV

My grandmother sat on the long couch, raising her legs until she was lying down leisurely.

“How long have you been listening in on our conversation?” my mom asked before shaking her head in frustration. “Anyway, it doesn’t matter. You heard what Levi said, right? He’s coming back to inherit Dad’s shares. Tell Dad to schedule a turnover ceremony.”

“It doesn’t seem to me that he wants to do that,” my grandma suddenly said.

I looked at her intently because I couldn’t read or understand what she was trying to do.

Agnes Moretti.

Growing up, my grandma wasn’t too involved in our lives. She was more of a bystander, always watching from the sidelines but rarely stepping in. It was only when I got older that she started demanding I settle down and get married soon, pairing me up with who she deemed fit.

“What is it that you want, Levi?” she asked, her head tilted to the side as she looked at me.

I pursed my lips and let out a quiet sigh. “I want to keep living the life I have now, but if it means-”

“Go ahead and do just that,” she cut me off, making me even more confused.

I felt that familiar warmth of Hope’s hand wrapped around mine. I looked at her and saw the optimism shining through her tear-filled eyes despite everything.

Fuck.

She had cried again.

My chest tightened.

I turned back to my grandma. “What do you mean by that?”

“Take it as literally as you can,” she chuckled. “Don’t mind your mother right here. She’s just sad she can’t keep you two. But she wants perfect children, and no children are perfect. She’s not perfect herself.”

“Mom! What are you doing? Are you siding with them?”

My grandma shrugged. “Honestly, I’d like to apologize to you because it seems this perfectionism was passed down from me. Actually, no,” she corrected herself with another amused chuckle. “It was passed down from my husband. But he always strived for perfection for the business, not for the family, Luisa.”

“Besides, it would be bad for the business if Levi or Zayla took over after your father. Your father really likes his work-much more than us, even. That’s why it has grown so big. If we hand it over to someone who was forced into it, it would be a disservice to everything he built.”

Chapter 160

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

But I certainly wasn’t complaining.

My mom might be powerful, but my grandmother was second only to my grandfather. If anything, she probably held even more influence over the old man than anyone else in this family.

My mom’s fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

“Are you hearing yourself? Does Dad even know about this?”

“Yes, he does,” my grandma answered without missing a beat. “It took a lot of convincing, but he came around in the end.”

“That’s why he’s passing the baton to Tom. You know Tom, right? Thomas.”

“Jon’s illegitimate child? Why would you give such a big business to a bastard?”

“Hey, now. Language.” My grandma clicked her tongue. “It’s simple. That kid’s really smart, and he actually likes the business. He’s done an incredible job during his internship, too.”

She reached for the bottle of wine on the table and uncorked it with a satisfying pop.

Then she drank straight from the bottle, making my mom grimace in obvious disgust.

“It’s time we break away from old customs.” She wiped the corner of her lips with the back of her hand. “I’m actually quite inspired by your children. I suggest you change the way you think about this family too… if you want to keep them.”

I turned to my mom.

For the briefest second, I saw hesitation across her face.

Regret. Fear. Maybe even guilt.

But I already knew deep inside that the wound between the two of us had been left open for far too long.

Some scars never truly healed.

“You won’t starve if that Tom kid takes over, so don’t worry,” my grandmother added with another carefree chuckle.

She turned to us after taking another sip from the bottle.

“So

go ahead and play hockey or do art or whatever.” She waved her hand dismissively. “I just want to ask one favor. Once you have a grandchild, can you bring them here?”

“Mom!” my mom exclaimed again.

Meanwhile, I felt Hope’s hand grow noticeably warmer.
