Chapter 52

Hope’s POV

The sound of roosters clucking woke me up, reminding me that we weren’t in Central Manhattan but in the more suburban parts of Albany.

It also reminded me that I wasn’t in my own room. And somehow, somewhere between worrying about Levi/and getting kissed breathless by him, I had ended up sleeping in his arms.

After he kissed me until my mind completely stopped, he had slept like a baby despite all his previous complaints about not being able to sleep properly. I wanted to ask for an explanation right then and there. Why the heck did he kiss me?

In the end, though, watching him sleep somehow pulled me into slumber too. Which brought us to this very situation.

As I slowly opened my eyes, his face was the first thing I saw. And, unfairly enough, he looked handsome as usual. /

There were just some people born like this, huh?

My eyes drifted across his features. His lashes looked annoyingly long. His hair was messy from sleep. His lips-

Nope.

I quickly looked away before my thoughts turned too deep. I lifted my hand and lightly touched his nose. When he didn’t budge, I flicked it. I couldn’t help but smile a bit because he already looked a lot better than last night.

“Do you even know what you did last night?” I muttered.

Nothing. Not even a twitch.

Instead, his arms tightened around me.

My breath hitched. To make matters worse, he shifted closer, buried his face into my neck, and breathed in deeply before relaxing completely against me.

My entire body froze. I cursed inside my mind. I couldn’t take this. Heat rushed through my entire body so quickly that I almost questioned whether I was the one running a fever now.

His temperature had definitely gotten better, too.

Mine, unfortunately, was becoming a concern.

I stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, trying hard not to think about the fact that Levi was clinging to me. Fortunately, I found an opening, and very slowly, I untangled myself from his arms and crawled away.

However, my escape woke him up. As I sat on the edge of the bed and looked back, he slowly opened his eyes.

His gaze looked dazed at first. Then, they settled on mine. Suddenly, all I could think about was yesterday. My cheeks warmed up again.

He was so… rough.

Like I said before, I refused to believe that he had never been in a relationship.

I really didn’t want to admit it, but he was good at kissing. Like, really good.

Definitely better than Connor.

And trust me, Connor had experience. A lot of experience. There were times when I accidentally ran into Connor’s exés, and they never exactly held back when talking about all the things they used to do together.

Meanwhile, Levi somehow kissed like he had the most experience in the entire world. He nipped my lips and massaged my tongue, and the sensations that ran through my body were unlike anything I had felt before.

I forcefully snapped my attention back to him to get rid of such vulgar thoughts. However, instead of feeling awkward by these thoughts, I frowned when I saw his expression.

He looked confused. He stared at me like he had absolutely no idea why I was sitting in his room.

“What are you doing here?”

And it seemed I was right.

I stared at him for several seconds, processing what he had just said.

“Huh?”

He glanced toward the clock before running his fingers through his already messy hair.

“What are you doing in my room so early in the morning?”

It felt like someone poured lava over my entire body.

He didn’t remember? Not when he kissed me like he had been starving?

For a moment, all the teasing suddenly came rushing back. Everyone constantly teased us-teling me Levi acted differently around me and that we suited each other.

Had all of that somehow gotten into my head?

Did they somehow rewire my brain into thinking Levi and I were closer than we actually were?

Maybe the kiss last night finally pushed me over the edge.

But honestly… there should have been nothing to push in the first place.

I was right from the beginning.

I quickly stood from the bed.

My throat suddenly felt tight.

Curse me and my stupid shallow tears.

Still, I swallowed them down and turned toward him.

“You were sick yesterday,” I said. “Don’t you remember?”

He bit his lip. For a moment, he looked like he was truly trying to remember what happened last night. When nothing appeared, I looked away first.

“I… don’t,” he muttered quietly. “I don’t usually remember events when I get sick. It always passes the next day, so I tend to forget about it.”

He paused.

“It’s unimportant.”
