Chapter 73
Hope’s POV
I was uncertain about a lot of things.

However, there was one thing I was absolutely certain about-Harley’s advice didn’t help at all. In fact, it only/made everything even more confusing.
I actually didn’t want to go to work today because I still didn’t know what to do.
There was an angel and a demon sitting on my shoulders, each telling me something completely different.
The demon said: ‘Just say yes! It’s just sex. When else would you ever get the chance to sleep with THE Levi Reeve? Harley was right. He’s the only exception.”‘
On the other hand, the angel said: ‘He asked you to sleep with him when he hasn’t even established his feelings for you. Do you want to get hurt again?’
“Hey, we just missed your stop.”
Harley tapped my shoulder while scrolling through his phone.
My eyes widened as I looked outside.
I had indeed missed my stop because of everything going on inside my head.
“You really just told me right now? You couldn’t have told me before we arrived?”
He shrugged.
“You looked deep in thought. Besides, I already told you-sleep with the guy if he’s Levi Reeve. If not, then don’t bother.”
I wanted to hit this boy in the head, but I held back because of all the people around us.
With a sigh, I pressed the button for the next stop.
It wasn’t that far from the rink, but I still had to walk a couple of blocks.
When I stood up, I didn’t miss the opportunity to pinch Harley’s side. He yelped like a little girl, earning strange looks from the other passengers.
With a smirk, I quickly got off the bus. Harley glared at me through the glass windows, but I simply stuck my tongue out at him.
Then, I turned toward the road and began walking to the rink.
Maybe this was actually a good thing.
I could delay the inevitable.
I could clear my mind.
Or not.
A loud honk sounded from the roadside.
I halted and glanced over, watching a white, brand-new sports car pull up beside me.

I frowned and instinctively stepped back, preparing to walk away. Then the window rolled down, and a familiar voice called
out.
“Wait, Hope.”
My frown deepened when Connor smiled at me and pulled down his sunglasses, which I doubted he even needed considering how heavily tinted his windows were.
“Are you on your way to the rink?” he asked.
I pursed my lips and merely nodded. I wasn’t really in the mood to talk to him when my mind was already/occupied with
Levi.
“I’ll drive you there.”
My frown deepened even further. I didn’t need him adding to the mess already inside my head.
I shook my head.
“It’s only a few minutes on foot. There’s still time before my schedule starts, so just go.”
“I insist.”
His smile widened.
I bit my lip and released a slow breath, preparing to walk away.
But then, he said something that rooted me to the spot.
“Are you not curious why I cheated on you?”
My breath hitched. Every muscle in my body locked.
Walk away, Hope.
Walk away.
There was no reason for you to hear about this.
You had already broken up, and you had already moved on.
“I wasn’t ready to tell you back then,” Connor continued. “But I’m ready to tell you now.”
I released a deep sigh.
I hated myself for being weak. But despite everything, I turned back around.
I was sure I didn’t have lingering feelings for Connor. That much was true. However, I still had questions. A lot of them. I still doubted myself sometimes. I still wondered why he cheated on me when I had given him almost everything.
Maybe hearing the answer would finally allow me to put that chapter of my life behind me.
I decided this would be the last time. The very last time.
I caught the small smirk on his face. I wanted to slap it right off. But instead, I kept my hands to myself.
The car unlocked with a soft click.
I opened the passenger door and climbed inside.

Chapter 73
The moment I settled into my seat, he addressed something unrelated to what he promised.

“Don’t you like my new car?” he asked while pulling up to the road again. “This is the one I always wanted to buy. I finally managed to get it through a loan. Now I can pay for it with my own money.”
I pursed my lips.
“Cut to the chase, Connor.”
I didn’t want this conversation lasting any longer than necessary.
He released a slow breath.
“I’m finally reaching my dreams one by one, Hope.”
My jaw tightened.
I know, Connor.
These were all the dreams he used to talk about. The dreams we used to talk about. The future we used to plan together before he destroyed everything.
“Honestly,” he continued, “I was stuck in a dark place for a while. I thought I’d end up playing in some unknown league for the rest of my life.”
“Then I met Delaney.”
At the mention of her name, I bit the inside of my cheek.
The rink continued getting closer. Yet somehow, we were still nowhere near the explanation I wanted.
“We met at a bar after a victory party with some friends,” he said.
His gaze remained fixed on the road.
“It turned out she was a scout looking to recruit a backup center for the Glaciers.”
I remained silent.
“I didn’t want to pass up that opportunity. So when she offered me a position in exchange for sex, I agreed.”
