Grant's thumb hovered over the answer button, trembling slightly in hesitation.
Down in the living room, Nathaniel was still screeching, spewing wave after wave of toxic filth. But to Grant, it all melted into meaningless white noise. He couldn't process a single syllable of it.
His heart thudded violently, feeling as though it were being crushed and released in the grip of a giant hand.
She had unblocked him on her own.
That single undeniable fact circled his brain over and over, dulling the searing agony left by the memory of her kiss with Lucas.
Sucking in a sharp breath, he accepted the call.
"Hello," he answered, artificially lowering his voice to sound as glacial and detached as possible.
There was two seconds of dead silence on the line.
Then came the voice he knew intimately, a voice he hadn't heard sound like this in ages.
Sienna was stifling a sob, her tone impossibly soft and thick with sorrow.
"Grant..."
Just his name. His grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles cracked.
"What is it?" he asked coldly, fighting the bob of his Adam's apple.
"I... I missed you." Sienna's voice shook violently, every word sounding as though it had been excruciatingly ripped from her throat. "I really, really missed you..."
Grant's body practically locked up.
She said she missed him?
He had never heard Sienna speak so needily before, not even during the peak of their marriage.
Who knew her desperate, pleading tone would be a hundred times more intoxicating than Lyla's?
A dizzying rush of heat shot straight to his brain, setting his ears on fire.
But the very next second, the image of her kissing Lucas violently hijacked his mind again.
Even though he fully believed she was just playing a role, he had to maintain his dominance. He needed her to understand that Grant Gauthier wasn't a man who could be pacified so easily!
"Missed me?" he scoffed, dripping with calculated mockery.
"I didn't hear you complaining about missing me when you were sucking face with Lucas in the back of his car last night. You looked so into it, I figured Mrs. Gauthier had already forgotten I existed."
