He mechanically accepted the report, his gaze locked onto those lines of text.
The hand holding the paper began to tremble uncontrollably.
A baby...
Lyla was carrying his child?
An immense wave of ecstatic joy instantly obliterated all of his rationale, consuming his entire chest.
At that moment, the curtain in the ER was pulled back, and the nurse wheeled Lyla out.
Her face was still a bit pale, but her eyes had regained their clarity. She looked up at him timidly, tears pooling in her eyes.
"Grant..."
Grant took large strides forward and grabbed her cold hands. His movements were softer than they had ever been, as if she were an unparalleled treasure.
"Lyla," his voice was raspy, yet overflowing with unprecedented tenderness. "You're pregnant. Did you know?"
Lyla's eyes widened instantly.
She instinctively cupped her lower stomach, her face shifting through shock, confusion, and finally settling into an overwhelming, bewildered delight.
"I... I'm pregnant?" she stuttered. "Grant... is this real?"
"It's real." Grant nodded heavily, his eyes melting with affection and ecstasy. "Our baby."
He carefully helped her up, pulling her into his embrace.
"No one is ever going to bully you again, you hear me?" he murmured, completely unaware of the deep coddling in his own tone.
Lyla hummed softly, nestling against his solid chest, her cheek pressing against his warmth.
She lowered her gaze, her long lashes masking the triumphant, malicious gleam in her eyes.
"Grant..." she suddenly whispered, lacing her voice with the perfect mix of lingering terror and grievance.
"Yes?"
"Today... Sienna..." She bit her lower lip, acting as though the words were agonizing to say.
