The lights in the Gauthier mansion remained on all night.

Lyla leaned against the headboard of the massive, plush bed in the master suite. She was propped up on three layers of imported down comforters, clutching a stuffed bunny to her chest.

Her complexion was still a bit pale, but her hand rested lazily over her stomach, as if guarding something fragile.

Grant sat on the edge of the bed, a bowl of prescribed tonic resting beside him.

"Feed me, Grant."

Lyla pouted, her eyes curving into sweet crescents, her voice practically dripping with syrup.

Grant paused. In his entire life, he had never waited on another human being, let alone spoon-fed someone medicine.

But remembering that Lyla was carrying his child, he ultimately picked up the bowl.

He scooped up a spoonful, blew on it to cool it down, and brought it to her lips.

Lyla took tiny, delicate sips, her lowered lashes hiding the smugness in her eyes.

After two bites, she suddenly furrowed her brow, clutching her stomach and letting out a soft gasp.

"What's wrong?" Grant's hand jerked, nearly spilling the tonic.

"Nothing... just a little uncomfortable." Lyla shook her head, her voice growing weaker. "The doctor said I can't afford any emotional stress right now, but..."

She left the sentence hanging as her eyes reddened again.

Seeing her like this twisted Grant's heart into a painful knot. This was his first child; absolutely nothing could go wrong.

"But what?"

"But being all alone in this massive house terrifies me."

She gripped his sleeve, her knuckles turning white. "You have to go to the office during the day, Grant. If something happens to me while I'm home alone, the baby..."

She didn't dare finish the thought, letting massive teardrops roll down her cheeks.

Grant's brows locked tightly together.

It was a critical time at the company, and many operations required his direct oversight. But leaving Lyla in this state was genuinely out of the question.

"I'll hire a few more nurses to look after you."

"Nurses are strangers. I wouldn't feel safe." Lyla shook her head frantically, tears smearing across her face. "They could never be as attentive as family..."

Grant fell silent.

Watching his expression, Lyla suddenly shifted her tone, dropping her voice to a whisper, as if merely thinking out loud.

"If only... if only there was someone we knew inside and out to take care of me."
