Her parentage?

Wasn't she just a member of the Sawyer family? Could there really be some hidden secret?

Samuel's last sentence acted like a rusted nail, driving itself mercilessly into her brain and making her heart pound uncontrollably against her ribs.

She desperately demanded answers, but Samuel's voice abruptly cut off.

"Hello? What do you mean by that?! Answer me!"

No matter how loudly she shouted, the man could no longer reply.

"Did you hear that?" It was Lucas speaking.

"Don't take his words seriously. A man like Samuel will say absolutely anything when backed into a corner."

She knew exactly what kind of man Samuel was; growing up, the man had spun more lies than the cigarettes he had smoked. Every time he opened his mouth, it was with a motive, and every tear he shed was calculated.

Yet, that sentence lodged itself in her throat like a jagged fishbone, impossible to swallow down.

She had always felt completely out of place in the Sawyer household. Samuel was vulgar, Fiona was bitter, and Simon was downright lazy.

Meanwhile, she could sit quietly in a corner and paint for an entire afternoon at just seven years old. No one in the Sawyer family possessed even a shred of artistic inclination, making her talent seem as though it had materialized out of thin air.

After Sienna hung up the phone, the revelation continued to churn fiercely in her mind.

She turned to look out the window at the dazzling city lights and the ceaseless flow of traffic.

Her brush hovered over the canvas for a moment before she ultimately set it down.

Judging by Lucas's implications, he had likely handed Samuel and the others over to the debt collectors.

If he owed money to an underground casino, then that was exactly where they had to be.

If Sienna truly wasn't their biological daughter, then this was her absolute only chance to discover her true origins.

She wasn't going to miss it.

Later that night.

Sienna changed into a black hoodie and cargo pants, tying her hair back into a casual ponytail.

She flagged down a cab and headed straight toward the underground casino.

The area was sketchy.

By day, it was a bustling seafood market and warehouse district, but after dark, the alleys underwent a sinister transformation.

Neon signs flickered unreliably, modified cars idled by the curbs, and men in short sleeves leaned against the damp walls smoking, the ground around their shoes littered with cigarette butts.

One of them scanned her up and down, a hint of disgust flashing in his eyes before he barked aggressively.

"What do you want!"

"I'm looking for Laird," Sienna answered calmly.

This man was the same thug who had shown up at the Sawyer house to collect debts; he definitely knew where Samuel was.

Hearing the name, the two men immediately tensed with suspicion.

"Who are you?"

"Sienna, Samuel's daughter."

The two exchanged a look. One of them pulled out a walkie-talkie, muttered a few words into it, and then stepped aside.

The buzz-cut thug grunted, "Follow me."

Sienna trailed behind him straight through the card room, bypassing the front entirely and heading all the way to the back.

The thug pushed open an incredibly ordinary-looking display cabinet, revealing a hidden door concealed right behind it.

Stepping through the threshold, they traversed a long, narrow corridor until, after what felt like an eternity, a massive wall of sound crashed over her.
