"Lyla, come back to the Gauthier Estate with me today," he said.
Lyla Lennox was both shocked and thrilled, feigning just the right amount of hesitation. "Grant, is that really a good idea? Will... will Eleanor dislike me?"
"I'll be there," Grant Gauthier said, his tone unwavering. "This time, I'll make sure the whole family accepts you."
Lyla buried her face in his chest, a smug smile curling her lips at an angle no one could see.
Sienna Sawyer, I'm about to become the lady of the Gauthier household.
You've lost, and you've lost miserably!
At the Lowery Private Hospital.
In the top-floor VIP suite, Sienna Sawyer was already awake.
Lucas Lowery sat by the bed, meticulously peeling an apple with a paring knife, keeping the skin in one continuous ribbon.
The television in the room was on, broadcasting the scene of Grant and Lyla at the hospital entrance on every channel.
Catching it out of the corner of his eye, Lucas discreetly picked up the remote and turned off the TV.
"What would you like to eat?"
He diced the peeled apple into small pieces, speared one with a toothpick, and offered it to her as if nothing had happened.
Sienna shook her head, her complexion still pale.
She had already guessed as much.
From the moment Grant turned and walked out of her room, she knew it would come to this.
Just then, Sienna's phone rang.
It was Madeline Gauthier calling.
She frowned when she saw the name on the screen. After a moment of hesitation, she answered it.
An impatient voice quickly came through the speaker. "Sienna, Eleanor wants to see you."
Eleanor?
Sienna asked in confusion, "What does she need me for?"
Madeline didn't answer and immediately hung up. It was as if speaking another word to Sienna would somehow contaminate her.
"What's wrong?" Lucas asked.
Clara Collins was already waiting under the porch. Her eyes welled with tears the moment she saw Sienna, and she quickly hurried over to support her arm.
"Ma'am, you're finally here. Eleanor has been talking about you all morning."
Sienna paused in her steps.
She was no longer their 'Ma'am,' but Clara's address was so natural and full of heartache that she didn't bother correcting her.
Sienna followed Clara into the living room.
In the massive space, old Mrs. Gauthier sat alone.
Wearing dark loungewear, she leaned back against the sofa, thumbing a string of beads. She looked far more haggard than she had at the birthday banquet.
Hearing footsteps, Eleanor looked up.
When she saw Sienna's completely bloodless face and her shockingly thin frame, her hand abruptly stopped on the beads, and her eyes instantly grew glassy.
"Sienna... come here," Eleanor beckoned, her voice incredibly hoarse.
Sienna obediently walked over and sat down on the single armchair beside her.
