He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 151

Chapter 151

Mason’s POV

I did not sit down.

Standing gave me something…

Selina had moved to the armchair near the window:

Daniel Cole remained on my sofa.

The silence lasted long enough to establish that nobody in the room was going to pretend the previous ten seconds hadn’t happened

“Who are you,” I said, “to her.”

Cole looked at me with the settled patience of a man who had been in rooms where he held the advantage and had learned not to rush the advantage.

“Someone she kept separate,” he said. “From everything she was building with you.”

“That’s not an answer…”

“We were together,” he said. “Before you. Significantly before you.” He paused. “She ended it when the opportunity you represented became clear.” He said opportunity without weight, the way you said a word that was simply accurate.

I looked at Selina

She was looking at the city through the window.

“Why are you here?” I said to him.

“Originally….. money,” he said. “Selina has been paying me for eighteen months to stay quiet about things she preferred to remain quiet.” He looked at his hands. “Today I decided that the money had reached the limit of what it was worth, and the other things I was asking for had also reached a limit.” He looked at me. “So I decided to have a different kind of conversation”

“With me…”

“With whoever walked through that door.” He held my gaze. “It happened to be you.”

Selina made a sound…. not a word, the sound of someone whose calculation had just been superseded by events and was processing the superseding.

“Daniel….”

“Selina.” He said her name the way you said the name of someone you knew very well and had stopped managing. “You knew this was coming. You have known for months”

He talked.

I stood in my own living room and listened to the man on my sofa dismantle the architecture of the past years with the methodical patience of someone who had been holding the materials for a long time and had decided today was the day to use them

He and Selina had been together for two years before she moved toward me.

He had understood when she ended it what she was doing and why. He had not tried to stop her. He had understood that what he was watching was a strategic decision executed by someone who understood their own objectives.

I looked at Selina while he said this….

She did not look at me.

The miscarriages came next.

He said the word and I went very still.

“She was worried,” he said, “that the fertility situation would eventually become a problem she couldn’t manage from the outside. She had already verified, through means I assisted with…. that the issue was yours rather than Maya’s.”

The room was usually quiet

“What she did with that information,” he said, “was not passive.”

I looked at Selina.

“There was a clinic,” he said. “Private. Not connected to any of the consultants you were using together. A substance…. administered over a period of months, that interfered with early pregnancy without producing evidence in standard testing.” He looked at his hands. “I have the records. The consultation notes. The receipts.”‘

“You’re describing,” I said, and my voice came from somewhere I barely recognised, “something that….”

“Yes,” he said. “That’s what I’m describing.”

Three pregnancies.

Three losses

Three hospital waiting rooms where I had stood at the window with my hands in my pockets and decided not to cross the floor.

“Maya didn’t know,” I said.

“No,” he said

“She thought…”

“She thought what Selina needed her to think,” he said. “That the losses were unexplained. That her body was the variable.” He paused. “You had already declined to share your own results, which made it easier.”

I looked at the floor.

At the carpet under my feet…. the same carpet it had always been, in the room it had always been in.

Everything looked the same.

Nothing was the same.

Selina moved.

She came out of the armchair and stood between me and Daniel

“This is not….” she started.

“Selina.” Daniel looked at her with the patient, flat calm of a man who had decided that her intervention was not going to change the trajectory. “He’s going to find out everything eventually. The investigation into the shooting has already produced questions about the IV tampering. The detective has your name in files that are not moving toward each other.” He held her gaze. “The only thing we’re deciding right now is whether he hears it from me in this room or from a detective in an interview room.”

She looked at him

Then at me.

I waited.

The baby

He said it the way you saved the last item on a list when you understood it was the one that required the most

room.

“The child is mine,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Biologically,” he said. “Selina verified your results before she decided on the approach. She understood that waiting for a medical resolution was not a reliable strategy. She chose an alternative”

I looked at the monitor on the side table.

The green light.

The small, steady evidence of a sleeping person down the corridor….

The child I had held at midnight.

The jaw I had thought was mine

I turned to Selina.

She was looking at the monitor.

The expression on her face…. not the managed version, not the composed version, none of the versions I had catalogued across four years. The real one. The one that existed when everything else had been removed and what

was left was the face of someone who had carried something for too long and had finally arrived at the place

where it had to be set down.

Not relief….

“Selina,” I said.

She turned

I held her gaze across the room…..

“How much of our life together,” I said, “was a lie?”

She held my gaze.

Her mouth opened

Then closed.

She said nothing.

And the nothing was the most complete answer available.
