Chapter 150

Selina’s POV

I had come to tell him about the baby.

The fever had brokert that morning…. the caregiver had called at seven with the relief in her voice of someone who had been watching a small person through a difficult night and had seen them come out the other side. I had wanted to tell Mason in person rather than by message.

That was why I was here

That was why I had come through the door.

The room communicated everything in its first second

Mason. The secretary. The desk between them that was not functioning as a desk. The expression on his face that had not yet adjusted to the arrival of a witness.

I set my bag down on the floor.

Not a decision. The body making a statement before the mind had finished assembling the sentence.

I laughed.

The sound came out wrong…. short, contained, the kind that arrived when something was the opposite of funny and the only available response was the one that looked like its mirror.

“So this is who you really are,” I said, “when I’m not looking.”

Mason opened his mouth.

“Don’t,” I said.

The secretary moved toward the door.

Smart girl….

I looked at her…. at the careful way she was trying to become invisible without drawing attention to the attempt….

“You can go,” I said to her. My voice came out even.

She went….

The moment the door closed behind her, the evenness left.

“How long?” I said, this time my voice higher than it was earlier… furious.

“Selina….”

“Not with her specifically,” I said. “In general. How long have you been doing this behind my back?”

“I haven’t been…..”

“I just walked into the room,” I said. “Don’t insult me with a denial.”

He looked at the desk

“It wasn’t….”

“It wasn’t what? Serious? Meaningful? Just a distraction?” I crossed to the center of the office, putting distance between me and the door because I needed room and the door was not where I was going.

“You sat in a hospital corridor outside Maya’s room three days ago and looked at her like I don’t exist. You have spent every week of the past month finding new ways to position yourself near her. You leaked a story about her pregnancy to a gossip blog because you convinced yourself the baby might be yours.” I held his gaze. “And now you’re in your office with your secretary.”

“The Maya situation is….”

“The Maya situation.” I repeated the phrase back to him. “That at

weather system. Like you’re not the one generating the weather”

He stood up.

“You’re making this bigger than it is,” he said.

you call it. The Maya situation. Like she’s a

“I am making it exactly the size it is,” I said. “That is the one thing you have never been able to manage about me…. I see the exact size of things. I have always seen the exact size of things and I chose to stay anyway because I believed the rest of it was worth what I was looking at.”

Outside the glass walls, movement.

Employees finding reasons to be near the corridor. The particular, sideways attention of people who wanted to see without being seen seeing.

Let them look

Every week.

Every lie.

Every corridor.

Every time I had handed Mason something real…. the baby, the secrets I had been carrying alone, the money I had transferred to Daniel Cole to protect a life that was built on his belief, and he had been looking somewhere else:

I crossed the room

I am not going to justify what happened next.

My phone vibrated

I ignored it.

It vibrated again.

I looked at the screen

Unknown number. The kind I recognised without the number being stored.

Daniel Cole.

I opened the message

I’m already outside your house. I want my money and a good time. I miss you. Since you’ve been ignoring me, decided to come to you instead.

I looked at the building entrance

I

At the city.

At the message on the screen.

The baby was at home.

The caregiver was at home too.

And Daniel Cole was outside my house.

I took a cab.

Not because I couldn’t drive, because my hands were still carrying the residue of the past minutes with Mason and I didn’t trust them on a wheel in traffic. The cab driver didn’t look at me twice, which was what I needed from him,

I looked at the message again during the drive

I’m already outside your house.

The baby. The caregiver. Those two facts occupied the space where everything else should have been processing and pushed everything else to the margins.

The caregiver was in the hallway when I came through the door

Young…. twenty-two, reliable, the kind of person who communicated through the steadiness of her manner rather than what she said. She looked at my face and at my coat and at whatever the past two hours had left visible

on me.

“He’s sleeping,” she said. “The fever broke. He ate this morning”

“Good,” I said. “Take the afternoon off. I’ll message you when I need you back.”

She looked at me for a moment

Then she collected her things and left.

The apartment was quiet

And Daniel Cole was not outside the house.

He was in the lobby.

He came up when I called down.

That was how we had always managed the logistics….. the maintained distance of a connection that could not be acknowledged in any direction that mattered. He came up when called. He did not appear unless summoned.

Except today he had decided to change the terms

He came through the door…..

I handed him the envelope before he sat down.

“That’s what I could pull together today,” I said. “The rest by Friday”

He took it.

Looked at the contents

Put it in his jacket without counting it.

Then he sat on the sofa and crossed his arms and looked at me with the expression of someone who had decided that money was not the primary item on the agenda today…..

“Sit down,” he said.

“I’d rather stand.”

“Sit down.”

I sat.

He talked about the past.

Not the recent past…. the earlier version, the one that predated Mason and the company and the careful, deliberate construction of the life I had built. The version that contained a younger Daniel Cole and a younger me and the specific, narrow window of time when I had made choices that had seemed reasonable in their moment and had since become the architecture of everything he held over me.

“You were different then,” he said.

“People change”

“You didn’t change,” he said. “You upgraded…” He looked at the apartment, the furnishings, the view, the evidence of a life that had been assembled with significant intention. “This isn’t who you were. This is who you decided to become.”

“What do you want?” I said.

“I told you what I want.”

“The money…..”

“The money is part of it.” He looked at me. “It was always only part of it.”

I looked at the baby monitor on the side table

The green light.

Still and steady.

“Daniel….”

“You left,” he said. “You made a decision and you executed it and you built something and you never looked back. “He held my gaze. “I’m not angry about it. I’ve been thinking about that for a long time and I’ve landed on……. it was what you needed to do. It was who you were.” He paused. “But I’m here now. And I have what I have. And I’m asking for things that are not unreasonable given what I know and what I could do with it.”

“You could destroy everything,” I said.

“Yes,” he said. “That’s accurate”

I looked at him.

At the face I had known before any of this…. before Mason, before the plan, before the fifteen years of patient positioning. The face that belonged to the version of my life that existed before I decided it needed to be a different version.

He leaned forward

“We were good together,” he said. “Before all of it.”

“That was a long time ago.”

“Time doesn’t change everything,” he said

He reached out….

His hand on my face…. not forceful, the way a hand moved when it was doing something it had done before and was expecting the memory of it to do some of the work.

I should have moved away.

The calculation was clear and I ran it and arrived at the answer and then I sat there anyway while his mouth found mine and the past….

He kissed me.

And I let it happen

Not from desire. From exhaustion…

His hands on my coat.

The coat coming off.

The sofa

The past and the present occupying the same space.

The front door opened.

I heard it before I processed it.,. the sound of a key in the lock, the handle turning, the door swinging on its familiar hinge.

Mason.

He stood in the entrance

He looked at the room.

At Daniel.

At me

At the arrangement of us… the coat on the floor, my hair, the distance between us and the distance that had just been smaller than it was now.

Three seconds….

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at Mason with the expression of a man who had been interrupted and was deciding how inconvenient to find it. The assessment of someone running the situation forward and finding it, on balance, interesting.

He smiled

Not at me. At Mason.

The smile of someone who had been holding a card for a long time and had just found the right moment to show the table what he had

Mason looked at him.

Then at me

The expression on his face moved through things I had seen on it before in different arrangements… the cold assessment, the calculation, the managed surface over something underneath….. and then arrived somewhere hadn’t seen.

The recognition of someone who has entered a room and understood, in the space between one breath and the next, that the stranger in it is not a stranger at all

That the stranger is the key to something.

That the stranger has been there all along, in the margins of a story that had never been fully told.
