She exhales heavily. “Brennan, I-” Her scream cuts her off, freezing my heart in my chest,

“Mom! MOM! Are you okay? Mom?” I press the phone tightly against my ear. I hear hissing and faint whimpering.

“Mom! I’m coming, Mom.” The call disconnects, and I move instantly. I grab my phone and see that, by pure luck, there’s a flight leaving in three hours. I throw on clothes, snatch my wallet and keys, and rush out the door. I jump into my car and speed toward the airport,

thankful I don’t get stopped.

I manage to check in and find a seat to wait for boarding. I try calling Scar. I realize the

number is blocked, and since I don’t have another burner with me, I slam my fist down on

the table. I stand and search the nearby shops, but none of them sell phones. I’ll have to

wait before calling her. I’ll pick up a burner once I’m in Montana.

Several hours later, I am riding in an Uber headed directly to the hospital, the only one in the

city where we live. I rush inside and sprint straight to the front desk.

“Hi, a woman was brought in a few hours ago after a car accident. Her name is Cici Cici Graysen,” I say as soon as I reach the counter.

“And who are you?” the woman behind the desk asks.

“I’m Brennan Graysen, her son.‘

“Yes, Mrs. Graysen is assigned to room 508. Take the elevator up to the fifth floor and turn

“A car ran a red light and crashed into me. I hit my head and fractured my arm. Thankfully, it

wasn’t worse, and I don’t have a concussion. They’re keeping me overnight, and my car is

pretty damaged.”

“God, Mom. When I heard your scream and the sound of the crash, I thought I’d lost you,” I

say as I lean down and wrap my arms around her carefully.

“Oh, sweetheart. I’m so sorry I scared you. I’m really glad you came.”

“I’ll stay and get you home safely and settled in. After that, though, I have to leave again, Mom. I’m this close to getting Scar,” I explain, holding my thumb and index finger just
