I nod as I pick up my burger. He reminds me of Romero and Uncle Hale–an older man who flirts for fun but doesn’t mean any harm. Of course, he’s nowhere near as handsome as
Romero or Uncle Hale.
I eat at a steady pace and sip my beer. Once I finish, I sit there people–watching, enjoying the view of everyone dancing. Altogether, I’m there for about forty minutes. Between the three beers, I’m a little buzzed, and I feel amazing. I slide off my stool and head toward the dance floor. The band is playing a cover of “Rebel Yell” by Billy Idol, and the lead singer actually sounds pretty good. I jump in with the crowd and let myself move with the music.
I’m not shocked to see more women dancing than men, and I end up blending right into a group of drunk girls who throw their arms open and immediately pull me into their circle. I
learn they’re celebrating a combined bachelorette and bachelor party. The groom and his
guys are sitting at their table, getting just as wasted as the girls, watching them dance. I
think it’s honestly a great idea to do it like that, with everyone together. One of the
bridesmaids, Irene, tells me her brother is with them too–he’s also a groomsman–and she
says she wants to introduce me to him.
I tip my head in a quick shake, yet she won’t let it go; instead, she plants her feet, then
bellows at full volume for him to drag his ass onto the dance floor and dance with the fine-
ass girl she’s been chatting up. My face burns instantly, heat rushing into my cheeks.
Around her, her friends holler too, hyping him up and shouting encouragement.
A ridiculously tall, wiry young guy with vivid red hair and freckles scattered all over his face wanders in our direction. He looks painfully adorable. He can’t be older than twenty–one.
Everything about him reads youthful. He flashes a grin at his sister, and two dimples
appear in his cheeks. His green eyes glint as they land on me.

“This is my baby brother, Noah,” she announces, then falters and fixes a hazy stare on me.
“I don’t even know your name,” she blurts out.
“Natalie.”
“Noah, meet Natalie,” she says, brightening. “Isn’t she pretty? Tell her she’s pretty.”

Oh God–please, let the floor split open and swallow me straight down.

“You’re very pretty,” he murmurs gently. The music and the crowd nearly drown him out, but I catch the words by watching his mouth.
“See? Now you two are friends,” Irene declares. “Dance with each other.” She gives her brother a firm shove toward me, then spins away, already dancing off on her own.
He stares at me, I stare back at him, and we both lift our shoulders in the same helpless
shrug. Right then, the band launches into “Bed Of Roses” by Bon Jovi.
“Would you like to dance?” Noah asks.
“Yes,” I answer.
He settles his hands at my hips, and I rest mine on his shoulders.
“So, that whirlwind is my sister, Irene,” he says. “Sorry about her. She absolutely refuses to
accept that I’m into men, and she pulls this stunt every time we’re out together.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” I tell him. “If you’d rather not dance with me, that’s totally fine–I can handle
that.”
“No, no,” he insists quickly. “I do want to dance with you. My boyfriend is one of the
groomsmen, and Irene can’t stand him. He won’t care–seriously. Trust me. We’ve been
together since we were sixteen. His brother is the groom, and we’ve all known each other basically our entire lives.”
“How old are you, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I’m twenty–six.”
“Oh,” I say, giggling, “I honestly thought you were much younger.”
“Let me guess,” he says, amused, “you figured I just hit twenty–one? It’s the dimples and the face–I’m adorable.”
I toss my head back and laugh, full and unrestrained. I really need this. It feels unbelievably good.
“So what about you?” he asks. “How old are you, and why are you out here by yourself?”

“I’ve just turned twenty–six too,” I say. “And who says I’m by myself?”

“Well,” he points out, “you’ve been out on this dance floor for about half an hour with my sister and her friends. I’ve watched plenty of guys stare at you–some of them really
intensely–and not a single one comes up to you.”
“Nice observation,” I tell him. “And you’re right–I am here alone. I’m seeing someone… or I
was. It starts getting serious, but it’s complicated. Let’s just say I step back and let him go
so he can chase his happiness without me standing in the way.”
“Wow,” Noah says, clearly impressed. “That’s incredibly mature.”
“I guess that’s me,” I reply.
We keep swaying for a while longer, and just as the song is about to finish, a man–who has
to be Noah’s boyfriend–walks over and wraps his arms around both of us.
“Hello,” he says, smiling. “I’m Simon–Noah’s boyfriend.”
“Hi, Simon,” I answer. “I’m Natalie.”
He leans in close and whispers against my ear, “You two look gorgeous together, but can I
steal him back now?”
I giggle and nod. He kisses my cheek, catching me completely off guard, and then he gives
me a wink. “Have fun, beautiful.”
I stare at him for a second, baffled, then shake my head. I really need another drink.
Before I can even take a step, the lights cut out, and colored strobes and roaming
spotlights begin sweeping across the dance floor,
“Alright, ladies and gents,” a voice booms, “I want the bride on the dance floor with her bridesmaids. And I want the lady in red out there too. We’re about to play a little game.”
The moment he says “lady in red“, a spotlight locks onto me, and I go completely still. What is happening? What is all of this?
