I bid goodnight to Jace, Milo, and my dear daughter Scarlett. Rome, Hale, and I then proceed to Scar’s condo for a final drink. The previous evening unfolds as a revelation in my life. At fifty–two years old, I never once imagined my existence could shift so dramatically.
Witnessing Scar with her young companions reveals new possibilities to me. The moment she informs us of her divorce from Brennan, a feeling of joy surges within me. I never cared for that young man. He always displayed excessive pride and arrogance. In my opinion, and in Romero’s, refusing the gift of a house constituted profound rudeness. A tradition within our families dictates that the bride’s father not only covers the wedding expenses but also presents the couple with their first home. Should they already own a home together, the debt is instead cleared for them. Brennan, however, remains stubborn, insisting he alone would provide for Scar and required no assistance from us. What an arrogant fool. Yet Scar appeared content with him. She was youthful and immersed in that initial state of loving bliss.
Rome and I first encounter one another during our teenage years. Our relationship begins as a friendship, later transforms into a courtship, then evolves into a partnership of lovers, and finally settles into marriage. Hale has Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! e stands as a brother to Rome and a closest friend to me. I feel a powerful attraction toward him, yet my heart remains completely
devoted to Rome.
Consequently, I suppress that attraction and maintain only a warm friendship. Over the years, Rome subtly comments on our close bond. He sometimes jokes that I ought to have two husbands to satisfy my boundless desires. I invariably dismiss his remarks with laughter. While other men who have
shown interest in me provoke intense jealousy and possessiveness in Rome, he never displays any
concern when Hale flirts with me or pulls me onto his lap.
After Scar’s graduation, when we return to Spain, my emotions are bittersweet. I feel sorrow at no
longer seeing Scar each day, though a young woman must find her own independence, yet I also feel
happiness that Rome and I can travel freely. On some journeys, we go alone. On others, Hale
accompanies us.
One day, Hale declares his intention to move back to the United States. He expresses a wish to explore
and to discover a place where he can put down roots Why he could not establish that life in Spain remains a mystery to me, as he never explains his reasoning. I feel deeply wounded and devastated, and Rome shares this pain. They engage in a fierce argument.
Though I cannot make out their exact words, by the time their conflict ends, both men are quiet and Hale prepares to depart. Rome and I seek comfort in one another, yet afterward, life never fully regains its former quality. We continue to find happiness together, but a persistent sense that something is

absent remains. Upon seeing Hale again, we both immediately understand that the missing element has always been Hale.
Observing Scar with her men sends a torrent of wild ideas rushing through my mind. I watch Rome and Hale together, and they revert to behaving like teenagers, trading jokes and playful shoves. They
have clearly missed each other profoundly.
Last night, after Hale arrives from Scar’s place, we all settle comfortably onto the large couch in front of the television. I am asleep against Rome, my legs curled beside me, my feet resting against Hale’s leg. Rome shifts me so my head lies in his lap. The movement rouses me slightly, but I keep my eyes closed. Listening to Hale and Rome speak softly to one another is deeply soothing. Hale lifts my legs into his own lap. He begins to massage my feet and legs. The sensation draws a low moan from me, and their conversation pauses. But I remain only half awake. When I do not stir, their quiet discussion about Hale’s recent activities resumes. His hands travel upward until he is stroking the full length of my leg with his fingertips. I do not believe he is aware of what he is doing. That is when I hear Rome
whisper.
“You can go higher. Her inner thighs are so soft.”
“Rome, you do not mean that,” Hale whispers in return, his fingers going still on my leg.
“I do. I told you years ago, I would share her with you. You did not believe me when we were teenagers, you did not believe me after we married, and you did not believe me when you decided to leave. You are the only man I have ever allowed to touch her. I have known you have been in love with her for as long as I have.”
“You saw her first; I could not interfere. We were not raised for the type of relationship Scar has with
Milo and Jace.”
“So what, Hale? I have always told you, she was ours, not just mine. But you refused to believe it.”
“Stop it,” Hale says, his voice desperate.
“Look at her, Hale. Look how beautiful she is. She still looks so young. No one believes she is fifty–two. They all think she is barely thirty. She has aged beautifully. Men half our age hit on her.”
“And you did not put a stop to it?” Hale growls, his fingers resuming their slow movement. Goosebu mps break out wherever he touches with this new information I am hearing.
I have always placed Hale in an off–limits category, but hearing what Rome is saying, I should never have done that. The images now running through my head are positively indecent. I need to speak with Scar. That night, Hale sleeps in the bed with Rome and me, like in old times. Sometimes, when Hale drinks too much, Rome and I always lay him in bed beside us. I used to think our bed was huge and could accommodate all of us. But apparently Rome was thinking differently. Waking up,

sometimes we would all be cuddled together, with me in the middle. I used to joke that in the winters |
never needed a heater with the two of them.
After talking to Scar this morning in the kitchen, my thoughts are scattered everywhere. Could I suggest something? Will Hale accept me? I feel sure Rome would encourage me in what I am thinking. But now I have a plan, and it involves a great deal of wine. Scar tells me to raid her refrigerator and
wishes me good luck. I giggle at that, my daughter encouraging me to sleep with two men, one her
father, the other her Godfather.
“What is so funny, my love?” Rome asks as I collect the bottles and he gathers the glasses. We make
our way back to the living room.
“Just thinking about today. I really enjoyed it. That young man Elias was very funny.”
Rome scoffs. “No, he was not. I did not like the way he kept flirting with you. And he stared too long at your breasts.”
“Oh, you are crazy. No one was flirting or staring. He was simply being nice.”
“Izzy, you have no idea the effect you have on the male species. You are a very gorgeous woman. You have always been the object of many men’s obsession. You have no idea about the fights Hale and I
got into in high school and college over you.”
“Really?” I have no clue.
“You are still so innocent, my love,” he says, leaning down to kiss me. I place the bottles on the coffee
table, and Hale opens one. He fills three glasses, handing one to me and one to Rome.
“It is true, Isa. Do you remember Finnley Petrova?”
“Yes, we met him in our second year at university.”
“Well, he was bragging to our frat brothers that he was going to bag you. He did not know you were Rome’s girl. He saw you in the Quad one day and staked his claim. When Rome told him he needed to back off, that you were his, and had been since high school, Finnley told him to fuck off. He said that he would teach you some new moves so you could satisfy Rome and Rome could thank him later. Rome lost it and kicked the shit out of him. Some of Finnley’s friends tried to jump in, so I did too, along with Felix Boone. Felix was a good friend. I wonder what happened to him?”
“I had no idea.”
“Because we kept it away from you. Felix joined the Marines. He retired and lives in California now. He is married with eight children.”
