This location is strikingly beautiful. I am going to require an entirely new collection of clothing. I do not
possess appropriate attire for this level of warm weather. Having traveled from the freezing
temperatures of Montana to the warmth of Florida, I find myself entirely unprepared. The journey
takes me significantly longer than the anticipated thirty–eight hours.
One of the tires on my truck blows out, and then, in a small town where I stop, my vehicle’s starter fails
to function. In yet another town, my battery loses all power, forcing me to purchase a replacement. On my second night of travel, I contract food poisoning from a restaurant and am confined to bed for two full days.
Subsequently, I oversleep at the final motel and begin driving late. I switch on my old cellular phone to check for any messages from my mother. There are none. I send her a message to provide her with
the new number for one of the prepaid phones I have acquired. Before I can tum off my old phone, it
rings from an unfamiliar number.
“Hello?”
“Brennan?”
“Who is this?”
‘It is me, baby. Where are you?”
*Sloane?”

“Yes, Brennan. Where are you? I require your help; I have had an accident.”
“Sloane, I blocked your number. How dare you contact me from a different number, and we are no
longer in a relationship!”
“Brennan, I lost the baby. I lost our baby.”
“Sloane! It is far too early for that. You recently accosted me. You simply started your menstrual
period!”
‘Fine! Just return to me so we can attempt to conceive again.”
*Jesus, fucking Christ, Sloane. Gain some composure. You are losing your grip on reality. You need to move forward. I have moved. I am no longer residing in Montana. I will no longer be using this
telephone. I desire no further association with you. Goodbye.”

I terminate the call and throw my phone out the vehicle window. I possess a new prepaid phone. However, since Scar has now blocked that number as well, I require yet another one. Now, as I drive around Hollywood, Florida, I can comprehend why Scar selects this location. There are pleasant restaurants and stores. The beach is lovely, and the people are similarly attractive. Goodness, some of
the bikinis these women are wearing are nearly indecent. The men are physically fit; I will integrate
well here.
I require a place to reside. I have sufficient funds to support myself until the check for my house sale clears. I stop at a small café whose operation surprises me on the day following Thanksgiving.
“Hi, welcome to Haven Brew. What may I prepare for you?”
I look at the attractive blonde woman positioned behind the counter and smile.
“I will take a large black coffee and a blueberry muffin.”
“Name for the order?”
“Brennan.”
“Okay, your total is eleven dollars and fifty cents.”
I hand her a twenty–dollar bill and instruct her to keep the remainder as a tip. She smiles brightly at me and expresses her thanks.
“Hello, I am new to this area. Would you happen to know where I might locate a place to stay?”
“Um, there are weekly rental units down the road. They are impossible to miss. The establishment is
named Basecamp Lodging. The buildings are painted a vivid shade of pink.”
“Thank you.”
I sit and wait for my order. The place is cozy, with an open area to sit outside, so you can see the beach. The bell over the door jingles. I look over and see two guys walking in. Both are wearing green cargo shorts and a white HFD shirt. On the back of the shirts, I see as they pass, it says Hollywood Fire Department, Fire Rescue and Beach Safety. One guy is really tall and massive, with black hair; his
arms are covered in tattoos and I can see he has ink creeping from his chest to his neck. The other is tall but a little shorter than the first. He also has tattoos, but not like the other guy. He has sandy
blonde hair and a trimmed beard.
“Hi, Milo, hi Jace. Haven’t seen you guys in a while.”
“Getting our girl a surprise this morning. She has a lot of cooking to do this weekend. So we think of surprising her with a large winter iced peppermint latte and a sugar cookie with pink frosting. She’s cooking us breakfast at the station right now. Oh, and the Chief wants his usual.”

I watch as the two guys sit in a booth and am surprised when they sit side by side. But then one kisses the other. Didn’t they say they were getting their girl a drink? Maybe they mean it like their best friend, who is a girl. That has to be it, because these two are all over each other. They definitely do not have a girlfriend.
