Chapter 131
My chest ached harder.
“Hello?” Aria asked. “You still there?”
“Yes,” I answered immediately.
Too fast.
Too obvious.
“Oh okay,” she said. “Wait- you are coming too, right? Because I know Adrian definitely invited you.”
A painful laugh escaped me before I could stop it.
I ended it.
“Yeah,” I said quietly. “He did. I just… can’t come.”
“Why?”
“I have something to finish.”
Technically true.
I was currently in the middle of emotionally collapsing.
“Girl,” Aria said dramatically, “what could possibly be more important than helping me secure the hottest man alive?”
I forced another laugh.
“It’s something I need to submit.”
“Boring,” she sighed.
“Sorry.”
“Well,” she said brightly, “I’ll make you proud either way.”
That somehow hurt worse.
“I’ll give you the full gist later,” she continued. “Especially the part where I disgrace Mabel.”
I made some sound of agreement.
Then she added with a laugh:
“And maybe the part where I have victorious hot sex with Adrian.”
Something inside my chest genuinely cracked. I smiled anyway.
Because apparently I enjoyed suffering.
“Good luck,” I whispered.
Then the call ended. And suddenly the apartment felt unbearable.
I stared at the dark screen of my phone while my breathing slowly became uneven.
Why did this hurt so much?
Why?
I had literally told him to leave.
I was the one who pushed him away.
So why did it suddenly feel like my chest was being torn apart?
I stood abruptly.
Then sat back down.
Then stood again immediately because staying still suddenly felt impossible.
My heart was racing too fast and my thoughts were too loud.
Everything hurt.
I grabbed my jacket and walked out before I could think twice.
I just needed air.
Movement.
Something.
Anything.
The night air hit my face as I stepped outside and immediately headed toward my bike.
Please work.
Please.
I climbed onto it quickly and tried starting it.
Nothing.
I tried again.
Still nothing.
I stared at it in disbelief.
“You unbelievable traitor,” I said with gritted teeth.
Another attempt.
Nothing.
I smacked the handle angrily.
“This is not the time for mechanical rebellion!”
Still nothing.
Tears burned painfully behind my eyes now and that somehow made me angrier.
“Fantastic,” I muttered shakily. “Everyone is abandoning me today.”
The bike remained unmoved by my reaction. I got off it abruptly and started walking instead.
I didn’t even know where I was going.
I just knew I couldn’t stay still.
The cold wind hit my face while I wiped angrily at my eyes.
Because crying was humiliating.
Especially in public.
Especially over a man.
Especially over DeLuca.
Who was probably currently driving Aria to Mabel’s place while looking offensively attractive.
I hate everything!
I kept walking until lights caught my attention.
A bar.
