(Daisy’s POV)

The moment I heard the apartment door open, every muscle in my body tightened. I wasn’t waiting for him. At least that was what I told myself.

I was moving through the living space, trying unsuccessfully distract myself from my own thoughts, when DeLuca stepped inside.

He paused, I paused. And just like that, we continued staring at each other.

He shut the door behind him and placed his keys on the counter. Then he spoke first.

‘I didn’t see you at the championship opening at the school stadium.”

The statement caught me off guard. Not because of what he said. Because he was saying anything at all.

I folded my arms. “You wanted me there?”

His expression barely shifted. ‘I’m not chasing you from anywhere, Daisy.”

A laugh escaped me. Short. Disbelieving. “Really?”

“Yes, Daisy.”

Something inside me snapped then. “Okay, in that case, let’s talk about you running away from every conversation we’ve tried to have. Let’s talk about you avoiding the tension, avoiding the problem, avoiding literally everything and then suddenly showing up acting like an asshole!”

To my surprise, the corner of his mouth twitched. “Impressive.”

I frowned. “What?”

“You’ve added a new word to your vocabulary.”

For a second I simply stared at him. Then my frustration doubled. “This is exactly what I’m talking about.”

“What is?”

“You do this thing where somebody says something serious and you respond with something completely unneeded. You deflect.”

His gaze remained steady. “I gave a response.”

“No. You didn’t.”

I threw my hands up. “You become ignorant whenever things get uncomfortable. Then you act like nothing happened and somehow I’m the one left trying to drag this entire conversation forward.”

His jaw tightened slightly. “Ignorant.”

“Yes.
