Chapter 20
(Daisy’s POV)
For a second, I just stared at him.
And it was not in a dramatic, slow-motion, music-playing-in-the-background way. It was more like my brain had completely paused
and was trying to reload the situation with limited processing power.
Because-
He came back.
And that didn’t make sense.
I had already moved on from that possibility. So seeing him here, standing in front of me like this was normal, it threw everything off.
A thought flickered through my head before I could stop it.
Is he here to kill me?
That felt like a fair question, but DeLuca didn’t say anything. He just lifted his gun and fired.
I flinched hard… but I didn’t die.
The shot rang out, loud and sharp, and the chain snapped instantly, the metal breaking away from the wall with a harsh crack and the force jerked me slightly forward. Suddenly, I wasn’t anchored anymore.
I stared at my hands.
The shackles were still there. But I could move.
I took a step back as my eyes lifting slowly to him.
“You…” My voice came out softer than I expected. “You came back to help me?”
He said nothing.
Of course.
He didn’t even look at me properly, just scanned the room once before speaking.
“Stay close,” he said. “Don’t fall behind.”
That was it.
There were other men in the room now. I recognized one of them immediately- Fritzo, and another from that night of the kidnapping and the whole terrible introduction to this lifestyle I did not sign up for.
Which meant this was real.
This was happening.
“Okay,” I muttered under my breath. “We’re doing this.”
I tried to get my mojo on but DeLuca moved first, and I had to rush after him.
We stepped out into the hallway. It was dim, long. And very, very not okay-looking.
Bodies…
There were bodies on the floor. Not passed out. Not unconscious. Just… still.
