Chapter 21
Without even fully turning, he extended his arm slightly and fired. A body dropped somewhere just out of my view.
I blinked.
“What…?” I exclaimed, because he hadn’t even looked.
He just… knew.
“Let’s move,” he said and we moved Again. This time it was worse.
More gunfire.
Closer.
Louder.
I heard a shout beside me and turned just in time to see one of the men go down.
“Wait-!” I gasped, instinctively reaching out before stopping myself.
There was no time. DeLuca prompted me and we kept moving. But another shot and another man dropped.
The group was smaller now.
“Okay,” I breathed, my panic rising higher. “This is getting significantly worse.”
We ducked behind another pillar now, and DeLuca turned to me.
“You’re going to do something for me.”
My heart was pounding so hard I could barely hear him and understand my following thoughts.
“What?” I said first. Then, I don’t think I’m qualified to do anything in this situation.”
He ignored me and pointed at the large exit- open space with gunfire between here and there.
Oh.
Oh no.
“You’re going to run out,” he said. “Don’t stop.”
My entire body went cold.
“R-Run out?” I repeated faintly. “Through… that?”
I stared at the distance like it was the Red Sea.
“That feels like a bad idea,” I said. “That feels like a very, very bad idea.”
“I’m not going to ask if you trust me.”
“Good. Because I don’t!” I said quickly.” I don’t trust anyone holding a gun right now.”
His gaze shifted to me.
“Look at me.”
I hesitated. Then I did… and for a second, everything else faded.
The noise.
The chaos.
The panic.
“Nothing bad will happen,” he said with certainty.
