Pierce let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. "What, am I interrupting a touching family reunion?"
Seraphina finished speaking and completely ignored him.
Her stance was crystal clear. All she wanted was a divorce.
She had spent the last three years as a deranged, paranoid woman. Having finally dragged herself out of that toxic swamp called love, she had no intention of ever falling back in.
Pierce's words were laced with blame, making it sound like she was the one entirely at fault.
Seraphina couldn't even be bothered to argue anymore. Mr. Prescott was a young, successful tech billionaire who cared about his image and his pride.
They had a long history, and she was his legally wedded wife. If he wanted to swap her out for someone new, he obviously needed a justifiable excuse, didn't he?
Otherwise, what would the press say about him?
To protect his reputation and the corporate image of the Prescott enterprise, the reason for their divorce had to be framed as her being "morally bankrupt" or "deeply manipulative."
And Seraphina was just an ordinary person. She came from an ordinary family with an ordinary job. How was she supposed to fight against the entire legal and PR machinery of his company?
Over the past three years, she had learned one crucial lesson.
When an outcome cannot be changed, agonizing over it is just a waste of time.
Since a divorce was inevitable, the process didn't matter. The destination was the same.
Once the papers were signed, they would go their separate ways. Sure, people might gossip for a bit when he and Lyra Langley finally went public, but the internet's attention span was short. Within days, some new scandal would grab the headlines, and everyone would forget.
She was done tearing herself apart over this. She just wanted it to be over quickly.
Since she refused to speak, Pierce didn't push it.
The two of them sat in absolute silence, the only sound in the room being the rhythmic beeping of her monitors.
Later that afternoon, Lana returned.
Seeing Pierce still there, she frowned in annoyance. "You're still here?"
Hearing Lana's voice, Seraphina finally reacted. "Lana."
"Hey, Doc, I'm here!"
Lana jogged over, but with Pierce occupying the chair right beside the bed, she couldn't get close to Seraphina.
