Seraphina was still half-skeptical.
But the spoon was right at her lips, so she opened her mouth and swallowed the warm porridge.
"Pierce, you'll cooperate with me to finalize the divorce papers, right?"
Pierce nodded again. "I will."
"You promised. You can't go back on your word."
"I won't."
Slightly reassured, Seraphina allowed him to feed her the entire bowl of porridge.
The warm, hearty meal smelled faintly of grains and sweet dates. As it settled into her stomach, a comforting warmth spread through her body, making her feel infinitely better.
"Alright, I'm done eating. Tomorrow we'll go to..."
Pierce lowered his eyes, pulled out a tissue, and meticulously wiped the corner of her mouth. "I agreed to divorce you, but I never said it would be tomorrow."
Seraphina swatted his hand away. "What the hell do you mean?"
"We can get a divorce," Pierce said smoothly. "In the next life."
Seraphina stared intently into his eyes, and he stared right back.
His gaze was dead calm, as if he hadn't just brazenly lied to her face.
Taking a deep breath, Seraphina stared at him for a long moment, then shook her head and let out a humorless laugh.
Pierce murmured, "I thought you were going to slap me."
"Three years ago, I definitely would have," Seraphina said, coldly turning her face away. "But right now, I feel like saying even a single word to you is a complete waste of time."
Pierce seemed used to her icy demeanor by now. As he packed away the food container and spoon, he said softly, "Alright, then get some rest."
He took the container to the sink, washed it, dried it thoroughly with paper towels, and put it away.
Seraphina didn't sleep. Her eyes were open, but they were devoid of any real light, clearly lost in thought.
Pierce said, "Sienna can come work at Prescott Holdings. There's an opening for an assistant in the executive office. She can shadow Felix, and it'll be easy for me to keep an eye on her. The base salary is around six thousand, with fourteen months' pay a year and a four-month year-end bonus. Ask her if she has any other requirements; she can just name them."
"There's no need," Seraphina said flatly. "Sienna already found a job."
