Alaric quickly interjected, "Don't worry, honey. Maybe her battery just died, or she accidentally turned it off. I think I have Pierce's number. Why don't you call him and ask?"
"Good idea," Elara nodded, dialing Pierce's number from her phone.
This time, the call connected almost instantly. Pierce's deep, respectful voice came through the line. "Elara, how can I help you?"
"Pierce, it's me," she said calmly. "My birthday is coming up, and I wanted to invite Seraphina over for a small celebration. We tried calling her, but her phone is off. We just wanted to check if she's doing alright. Why is her phone turned off?"
Hearing this, his tone remained perfectly smooth. "She's fine. She just lost her phone and hasn't had the time to buy a new one yet, so it's been off."
"Oh, as long as she's okay, that's a relief." Elara let out a long sigh, the heavy worry lifting from her chest.
He paused for a second before adding, "Rest assured, we will both definitely be there for your birthday."
"Wonderful. We'll be expecting you, then."
She smiled happily and ended the call, her anxiety completely gone.
Sienna, however, pouted and muttered unhappily, "Hmph. We didn't even invite him. Why is he coming? I don't like him. I like Silas way better. Silas is so much nicer—gentle, considerate, and he even helped me find a job."
Elara frowned, scolding her sternly. "Don't talk nonsense. She and Pierce are still legally married; it's only right for him to accompany his wife. Stop bringing up Silas, or people will start gossiping, and it'll ruin her reputation. Do you understand?"
"I got it, Mom."
