He Finally Noticed Me Right When I Was Leaving novel Chapter 5

That afternoon, Seraphina performed three back-to-back surgeries. By the time she stepped out of the operating room, she nearly collapsed.

Lana quickly steadied her. "Dr. Somerset, you can't keep doing this. You worked five days straight, pulled three all-nighters, and then jumped right into surgery today. If you keep this up, your body is going to give out."

Seraphina took a sip from the water bottle Lana handed her and waved it off. "I'm fine. I just need a little rest."

Lana muttered under her breath, "You've been saying that for three years."

Seraphina froze for a second. Had it really been three years already?

When Pierce first left, she went from being confused and lost to terrified. Pierce had never disappeared for so long without a word. She was genuinely afraid he had gotten into an accident.

She tried every possible way to contact him, but his phone number was disconnected, his social media accounts and email were deleted, and even his gaming burner account had been completely scrubbed.

Seraphina had no idea what was going on. Eventually, she went to the police.

Later, one of his best friends went to the police station and brought her out. He said, "Stop looking. He doesn't want to see you."

Seraphina asked, "Why?"

His friend looked frustrated. "Don't ask so many questions. Just accept that you two are over, and stop bothering him."

But the day before Pierce vanished, everything had been perfectly normal. Naturally, Seraphina refused to believe the excuse, so she continued trying every method to reach him.

But the result was exactly what his friend had warned—

If someone is determined to avoid you, all your efforts will just sink like stones in the ocean.

Going from anxious confusion to pure hysteria, Seraphina had ultimately ground herself down into the lifeless shell she was today.

Seraphina said to Lana, "It's getting late. You should clock out."

Lana offered gently, "Dr. Somerset, my boyfriend is here to pick me up. We can drop you off on our way."

"Thanks, but I'm fine."

"It snowed heavily today. Getting a cab is going to be impossible."

Seraphina waved her off, ushering Lana to go ahead.

Lana reminded her a lot of her younger self—hardworking, unafraid of hardship, with a pure heart for saving lives, and a boyfriend who showed up every day, rain or shine, to pick her up from work.

She had met the boy before. He seemed like a loyal, shy kid who treated Lana wonderfully.

But because Lana was a doctor, she was constantly swamped, leaving them with very little time to actually date. As a result, they had to make the most of her commute just to spend time together.

Seraphina had no intention of being a third wheel. Her own marriage had turned into a tragic mess, and she secretly hoped Lana wouldn't repeat her mistakes.
