Chapter 4
Chapter 4
He didn’t give Evelyn any chance to defend herself, scooping Seraphina up in his arms with finality. “I’m taking you to the hospital.”
Seraphina leaned weakly against his chest, looking at Evelyn with pitiful eyes: “But… what about your wife?”
Dante didn’t even look back, his words hitting Evelyn like stones: “She’s so good at this stuff, just let her walk back by herself!”
Watching the two of them disappear quickly, Evelyn stood alone in the empty bookstore, ice–cold all over.
Explain what? What was there left to explain?
The moment he saw Seraphina fall, he’d already decided she was guilty.
That furious look in his eyes–like he wanted to tear her apart–how could he possibly believe a word she said?
It had started raining outside, a cold drizzle that chilled her to the bone.
step by step, Evelyn walked back to the base housing in the rain.
The water soaked through her clothes, her cold shoes rubbing painful blisters on her feet. Every step was agony, and she looked completely wrecked.
She finally made it to the front door, but the scene that greeted her when she pushed it open sent her heart plummeting into an abyss-
Dante was kneeling beside the couch, carefully tending to a wound on Seraphina’s knee, his movements gentle and focused, his profile showing a tenderness Evelyn had never experienced.
Seraphina’s sharp eyes caught sight of the soaking wet Evelyn in the doorway, and she immediately made a show of trying to pull her leg back: “Dante… maybe I hould do this myself… your wife’s back, and if she sees us like this…that’s not gonna look good…”
Dante didn’t even look up, his voice ice–cold: “She’s the one who caused your injury. What right does she have to be upset?”
That sentence was the final straw that crushed what little hope Evelyn had left.
ler chest went numb with pain. She silently turned and went back to her cold room.
After she’d taken a hot shower, trying to chase away some of the chill and exhaustion, she came out of the bathroom to see Dante carrying her thick comforter and small space heater out of the room.
What are you doing with my things?” Evelyn’s voice trembled slightly from cold and heartbreak.
Dante paused: “Seraphina gets cold easily. The blanket in her room is thin. She needs these more.”
What about me?” Evelyn stared at him, barely believing her own ears.
Dante frowned, as if her question was completely unnecessary: “You’ve always been healthy, haven’t you? Even if you get sick, you’ll just lie around for a ouple days and do less housework. Seraphina’s different–she’s an important scientist! If she gets sick, it could delay national projects. Can’t you figure out which is more important?”
With that, he carried the comforter and heater straight to Seraphina’s room without hesitation.
That night, cold air seeped through the window cracks as Evelyn curled up under a thin sheet, shivering uncontrollably
Until the next morning, she woke up with a high fever.
When Seraphina knocked on her door, Evelyn was barely conscious.
“Hey, are you awake? Come have breakfast,” Seraphina’s voice came through the door.
Evelyn summoned what little strength she had, her voice hoarse and weak: “1… don’t feel well I have a fever…”

since you have a high fever, stay in this room for the next few days! Don’t come out and risk infecting Seraphina.”
velyn opened her mouth, but her throat felt like sandpaper–she couldn’t make a single clear sound.
he wanted to say she needed medicine, needed water, needed some basic care.
ut Dante didn’t give her any chance to speak. He stepped back efficiently and grabbed the door handle.
With a soft “CLICK,” he actually locked the door from the outside!
