Chapter 5
Evelyn’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at that tightly shut door, the blood in her entire body running cold.
He’d actually locked her in?
Not just locked her in–he hadn’t even left her any fever medication, not a glass of water, not a bite of food!
‘Dante…” she used what little strength she had to pound on the door, her voice broken and desperate. “Open the door… medicine… please, just some medicine…”
Dead silence outside.
Her pleas fell on deaf ears, getting no response whatsoever.
nstead, through the door she could faintly hear Seraphina’s soft laughter and Dante’s occasional low responses from the living room.
They seemed to be watching TV or chatting, those relaxed, pleasant sounds forming a sharp and cruel contrast to her current agony and despair.
Her heart felt like it was submerged in ice water–cold and aching.
the slid down the door to the floor, pressing her forehead against the cold wood as burning tears finally spilled over, mixing with her fever in a complete mess.
Was he really so afraid of her infecting his precious Seraphina? So afraid that he could lock up his sick wife without hesitation and leave her to fend for
erself?
Apparently, when you don’t love someone, you really can be this heartless.
The fever hit hard, but Evelyn managed to survive it through sheer stubborn will and what was left of her usually decent constitution, enduring the alternating orture of chills and burning heat in a delirious haze.
A few days later, when she could finally stand up weakly, the door lock clicked open from outside.
Jante stood in the doorway, still wearing that same cold expression, as if he wasn’t the one who’d locked up his feverish wife and ignored her for days.
eeing her standing there pale as a ghost, he just said flatly: “Looks like you’re better. Pay attention next time–don’t get sick over every little thing.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes, about to speak, when Seraphina came over with a bright smile: “Evelyn! You’re finally feeling better! There’s an educational event at he science messeum today for students. I’m giving a presentation on rocket fuel theory and doing a hands on demonstration. Want to come watch? You’ve been soped up for so long, you should get some fresh air.”
Evelyn was about to refuse, but Dante spoke up: “Good idea. We’ll all go.”
Leraphina looked surprised: “Didn’t you say you had an important meeting this morning?”
Dante’s tone was casual: “Pushed it bark an hour. No big deal. I’ll watch your demonstration and then head over.”
Evelyn felt another silent stab to her heart.
Once, when she’d had such a bad cold it nearly turned into pneumonia and she was lying in bed barely able to drink water, she’d asked him to take lease ta drive her to the hospital, fed refused outright, daining military duties, and a neighbor had finally taken pity on her and driven her to the clinic
Apparently, all principles and busy schedules bent to favoritism.
In the end, all three went to the science museum
In the demonstration hall, Seraphina put on a lab coat and stood among a group of curious students, beginning to explain the baste principles and safety protocols for rocket fuel.
She spoke dearly and confidently, looking genuinely professional.

Chapter 5
Dante stood nearby, his attention focused entirely on Seraphina, those usually cold eyes clearly showing admiration and approval.
Evelyn stood silently at the edge of the crowd, watching this scene with a stabbing pain in her heart, saying nothing.
After a while, Dante’s aide came jogging over and whispered: “Colonel, your meeting’s about to start.”
Dante nodded and walked over to Seraphina, saying something in a low voice.
Seraphina gave him a radiant smile and made a “don’t worry” gesture, and only then did he turn and stride away.
After Dante left, Seraphina began preparing for the hands–on demonstration. She picked up a measuring cup and started mixing simulated fuel.
standing nearby. Evelyn’s brow gradually furrowed.
Watching the amounts Seraphina was pouring, her heart suddenly lurched–those proportions were way beyond safe parameters!
Even though it was just simulated fuel, mixing it in those ratios could easily cause a violent chemical reaction that might result in intense burning or even a mall explosion!
With so many students here, the consequences would be catastrophic!
Imost on instinct, Evelyn rushed forward and grabbed Seraphina’s wrist: “Stop! You’ve got the proportions wrong! This is going to cause an accident!”
eraphina was startled by the interruption, then her face showed offended anger.
Evelyn? What the hell are you babbling about? You really think buying a few books makes you an expert? Someone who didn’t even graduate high chool–what gives you the right to lecture me? Get lost and stop interfering!”
