Chapter 6
A flicker of weak hope had just risen when she saw a tall figure burst through the smoke and find Seraphina, who was lying not far from her.
He carefully checked her over, then quickly scooped her up in his arms.
‘Dante…” Evelyn used the last of her strength to call out his name hoarsely, reaching out her hand.
The smoke was too thick–he seemed not to hear, or maybe he simply had no time to spare. He carried Seraphina and turned without hesitation, quickly lisappearing beyond the fire.
The second he left, a burning beam came crashing down with a terrifying sound, landing heavily just in front of Evelyn. The flying sparks and complete despair inally consumed her last thread of consciousness.
When she woke up again, she was in a hospital.
The moment she opened her eyes, she met a pair of ice–cold pupils.
Jante sat in a chair across from her bed, still perfectly upright, his uniform immaculate, but his expression was frighteningly dark.
eeing her awake, he showed no concern whatsoever–his first words were a cold interrogation: “Do you realize what you’ve done?”
velyn’s head was still ringing, her whole body aching. His out–of–nowhere question left her bewildered: “Realize what?”
Still making excuses!” Dante’s voice shot up, fury burning in his eyes. “You don’t understand anything–who gave you the nerve to mess with that equipment?! our stupid behavior caused an explosion that seriously injured Seraphina and affected dozens of students and staff! And you still don’t admit you were
Vrong?!”
velyn stared at him in disbelief, feeling like he’d personally stabbed her through the heart: “It wasn’t me… it was Seraphina! She’s the one who got the roportions wrong…”
Shut up!” Dante cut her off harshly, disgust practically pouring from his eyes. “Seraphina is brilliant with the highest professional standards–how could she ossibly make such a basic mistake?! She already told me when she woke up that her demonstration was going perfectly until you suddenly rushed in and nessed with everything, causing the explosion! Evelyn, I never realized you weren’t just ignorant, but malicious–trying to blame someone else when omething goes wrong!”
She’s LYING!” Evelyn trembled with rage, her wounds throbbing.
You’re the liar!” Dante didn’t believe a single word she said. “The facts are right there–so many people got hurt! You injured Seraphina and all those civilians. This time I can’t protect you!”
de stood up, looking down at her like she was a despicable criminal, coldly pronouncing judgment: “Guards!”
Two soldiers entered immediately.
Take her away! Charge her with endangering public safety–public humiliation, then labor reformt Execute immediately!”
Evelyn was roughly dragged from the hospital bed, forced into a tattered prison uniform, and loaded onto a military truck
The truck drove slowly through the city while loudspeakers announced her “CRIMES.”
People lined the streets on both sides, pointing and whispering, hurling rotten vegetables, stinking eggs, and even rocks at her
That’s her! She almost blew up the science museum!”
“What a vicious woman! And she’s supposed to be a military wife!”
“Disgusting! She’s a disgrace to the military!”

Chapter 6
Curses and projectiles rained down like hail.
Evelyn curled up in the truck, rotten vegetables in her hair, warm blood trickling from where a stone had cut her forehead.
She kept her eyes closed, teeth clenched on her lower lip until she tasted blood, but she wouldn’t let go. The physical pain was nothing compared to her dead heart.
After the public shaming, she was sent directly to a labor reform facility on the outskirts of town.
The conditions there were extremely harsh, with endless backbreaking work every day.
The guards seemed to have received “special instructions” and treated her with particular severity.
Those three days felt like three years.
She gritted her teeth and endured, her hands covered in blood blisters, her shoulders bruised and aching from heavy loads, every breath filled with humiliation and despair.
After three days, she was released.
Dragging her wounded and exhausted body, she made her way back to the base housing step by step.
At the reform facility entrance, a worker handed her a small packet of medicine: “There’s a flu outbreak going around. Be careful when you get back. This is nedicine from the organization–one packet per person. Take it.”
Evelyn accepted it and murmured her thanks.
When she reached her front door, she ran into Dante leaving.
le saw her bedraggled appearance, covered in dirt and grime, and his brow furrowed habitually, his eyes showing not a trace of emotion.
There’s a flu epidemic going around. Go clean yourself up and take precautions. Don’t infect Seraphina.”
