Chapter 4
ler heart ached so much she could barely breathe, but Evelyn said nothing, simply moving out of the way in silence.
heodore helped Maren into the bedroom to get his clothes.
1st then, Evelyn’s white Pomeranian, Snowball, came running happily in from the balcony. It recognized Theodore and, wagging its tail excitedly, started to imp up on him affectionately.
Ah!” Maren let out a terrified scream, shrinking into Theodore’s arms and trembling.
heodore immediately shielded Maren behind him and shot Evelyn a look of displeasure, his tone reproachful. “Evelyn! You really need to train this dog better!
thas no manners!”
sharp pain stabbed at Evelyn’s heart.
nowball was a birthday present from Theodore three years ago. He had said she was too lonely when he wasn’t around and that having a little dog to keep her ompany would be better.
nowball had always been a good dog, just a little playful, and never bit anyone.
ut now, just because Maren was scared, just because his heart and eyes were now completely filled with Maren, even Snowball’s existence had become a
nistake.
he took a deep breath and stood in front of Snowball. “If Maren is that scared of dogs, then she shouldn’t come here anymore.”
heodore’s face instantly clouded over, his voice filled with incredulous anger. “Evelyn! You’d kick your own sister out over a dog?! She just had a miscarriage, er body hasn’t recovered, and she’s emotionally unstable! Can’t you be more considerate? How did you become so unreasonable!
Inreasonable?
n his eyes, even her breathing was probably wrong at this point.
velyn stood her ground stubbornly, refusing to back down.
eeing her completely unyielding, Theodore grew even angrier and directly ordered the bodyguards outside, “Someone get in here! Take this dog away! Send it
o the animal shelter!”
No!” The color drained from Evelyn’s face as she rushed forward to protect Snowball. “You can’t send Snowball away!”
But the bodyguard was faster, swooping up the clueless, still–wagging Snowball and turning to walk out.
Snowball! Give my Snowball back!” Evelyn completely panicked. Forgetting her injuries, she chased after them like a madwoman.
Evelyn! Don’t run into the street! It’s dangerous!” Maren shouted anxiously from behind her, also running out and reaching to grab her.
it that moment, Evelyn’s mind was completely focused on Snowball being taken away. When she felt someone pulling at her, she instinctively flung her arm
Jack with force.
Ah!”
The push sent Maren stumbling. Her ankle twisted in her high heels, and she cried out as she fell toward the middle of the street.
At almost the same instant, a car swerved wildly out of control, its front end crashing toward Evelyn and Maren on the side of the road.
BANG!
A massive impact rang out.
Chapter 4
Evelyn felt her body being thrown violently into the air by an immense force, then crashing down hard.
Intense pain washed over her, and her vision quickly blurred.
In the final second before losing consciousness, she vaguely saw Theodore rushing over like a madman.
But he ran to Maren’s side, anxiously checking on her, calling her name with a trembling voice before immediately taking out his phone to call an ambulance.
An ambulance arrived quickly, but there was only one.
The paramedics quickly assessed their injuries and said to Theodore, “Sir, ambulances are stretched thin right now. We can only take the more critical patient to he hospital first…”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Theodore pointed decisively at Maren. “Take her first! Hurry!”
