Chapter 9
She gritted her teeth, not crying out, just staring with wide eyes at the man wielding the whip, as if to carve his image, along with this heart–gouging. bone–piercing pain, deep into her very soul.
After twenty lashes, Evelyn was covered in blood, her consciousness teetering on the edge of collapse.
Only then did her parents leave, satisfied.
Theodore dropped the whip. He looked at the weakly breathing Evelyn on the bed with a complicated expression, finally saying in a low voice, “Evelyn… don’t lame me. As soon as Maren and I have an heir, we will get a divorce… Just endure it a little longer, and stop hurting Maren. She… is really good to you.”
After he finished, he gave her one last deep look, then turned and left.
A little while later, Maren pushed the door open and walked in.
She looked at the battered Evelyn, and her eyes instantly reddened. She choked out, “Evelyn, I’m sorry. I didn’t want to frame you like this… but I love Theodore oo much. As long as you promise to leave him, to let go completely, you’ll still be my beloved little sister.”
Evelyn slowly lifted her head, her bloodshot eyes fixed on her, her voice hoarse but filled with a steely, resolute finality.
‘But Maren… I don’t need you as a sister anymore.”
Maren’s body stiffened. Her lips trembled slightly, and she turned and left.
Evelyn was locked in the hospital room for an entire night. The door was only opened by a bodyguard the next morning.
Her parents appeared again, throwing a suitcase down hard in front of her.
The day of the bedside wedding is almost here. You have to go to the Ashworths‘ today. We’ve brought your luggage. From now on, you are an Ashworth laughter–in–law. Stop thinking about Theodore, and don’t bother coming back home. It’s better for everyone this way.”
Listening to these heartless words, a smile of ultimate bitterness appeared on Evelyn’s face.
She looked at the parents who had raised her but never given her warmth and said calmly.
Don’t you worry.”
From this day on, I will never set foot in this house again.”
After she spoke, without waiting for their reaction, she endured the excruciating pain of her whip marks layered over old injuries, picked up her pitifully small uitcase, straightened her back, and walked, step by resolute step, out of the hospital room and straight to the airport.
‘rom then on, the world was wide, and they would never meet again.
Meanwhile, after calming the frightened Maren and seeing her emotions stabilize, Theodore finally remembered Evelyn, whom he had whipped and locked up
or a night.
flicker of irritation and an indefinable guilt crossed his mind.
le went out of his way to pick out an expensive gift for Evelyn, as… compensation for last night.
However, when he arrived at her hospital room, he found she had already been discharged.
Assuming she had gone home, he drove to Evelyn’s apartment, only to find it empty. Almost everything that belonged to her was gone, leaving only cold urniture, as if she had never lived there at all.
A strange sense of panic began to grip him.
