Chapter 15
Memories flooded in, uncontrollable, like water breaking through a dam.
n the past, whenever his stomach hurt, Evelyn would quietly stay by his side. Without him having to say a word, she would bring him a bowl of miller orridge, always at the perfect temperature.
he would carefully steam and mash yams into a fine powder to sprinkle on top and would serve it with a small dish of refreshing pickles she had made herse
he wouldn’t make a big fuss about her efforts like Maren did, she would just quietly watch him finish, then hand him a glass of warm water and ask softly. Feeling better?”
hat kind of meticulous, everyday care was something he had once taken for granted, even… somewhat overlooked.
And now, this burnt, bland bowl of porridge was like a mirror, cruelly reflecting what he had lost.
He pushed away the spoon Maren offered him, his voice hoarse and weary. “I’m not eating. I have no appetite.”
Theodore, I spent a long time making this…” Maren pouted, hurt.
I said I’m not eating!” Theodore suddenly raised his voice, a strange irritation lacing his tone.
le shot to his feet, ignoring Maren’s instantly pale face and tearful expression, and walked straight into the study, slamming the door behind him.
He needed to be alone.
he study was dark, enveloping him. His stomach still hurt, but his heart hurt more.
le took out his phone and, almost with a sense of self–torture, once again ordered his men to investigate Evelyn’s specific situation at the Ashworth estate, at
ny cost.
le had to know how she was really doing.
few days later, a more detailed investigation report landed on his desk.
he further he read, the more his heart sank. A mixture of shock, resentment, and intense panic seized him.
he report showed that at the Ashworth estate, Evelyn was not some imprisoned, mistreated bride in a proxy marriage at all.
in the contrary, she seemed to have earned the approval and trust of the Ashworth elders and had begun, under the guidance of Daniel’s uncle, Marcus, to get nvolved in and assist with some of the Ashworth Corporation’s business.
foreover, she displayed astonishing business talent and a sharp acumen. The few small mergers and brand restructuring projects she handled were executed. lawlessly, bringing considerable profits to the Ashworth Corporation.
low was this possible?
he woman who had always seemed so gentle and weak by his side, who needed his protection, was capable of this?
What he found even harder to accept were the few candid photos attached to the end of the report
The photos were taken in the courtyard of a high–end private care facility.
The sunlight was beautiful. Evelyn was wearing a simple cream–colored knit sweater and slacks, sitting beside a wheelchair.
n the wheelchair sat the Ashworth heir, Daniel, who was in a coma,
fis eyes were closed, his face peaceful. Although he was thin, you could still see the handsome features he had before the accident.
Evelyn wasn’t looking at him, but had her head tilted slightly, her eyes lowered to a book open on her lap.

Chapter 15
The afternoon sun filtered gently through the leaves, casting a soft light on her and outlining her tranquil profile.
Her expression was one Theodore had never seen before… a deep calm.
No resentment, no sadness, no bitterness, not even a ripple of emotion.
Like a deep pool of water that, after weathering a violent storm, had finally returned to absolute stillness.
This calm was more terrifying to Theodore than any intense hatred or accusation.
Hate meant she still cared.
