Chapter 17
Just… you know… made it so he would never show up again…” Maren sobbed pitifully, her words vague, but their meaning couldn’t have been clearer.
Theodore looked at the woman crying so pathetically on the floor, and for the first time, he felt no pity or protectiveness, only a chill that shot up from the soli
of his feet to the top of his head.
For Evelyn’s own good? Afraid she’d be sad? So she “took care of” the pet that Evelyn treasured?
The logic was absurd! It was vicious!
He remembered how Evelyn had recklessly chased after the dog into the street, how the first thing she asked when she woke up was where Snowball was… If she knew that Snowball had been killed long ago in such a cruel way by her “good sister“…
A more terrifying connection uncontrollably surfaced in his mind.
What about Maren’s miscarriage? And the incident with the thugs? Were they also…
Theodore didn’t dare to think any further, but the suspicion in his heart, like wildly growing weeds, could no longer be contained.
He immediately and secretly sent people to reinvestigate the old incidents of Maren’s miscarriage and her alleged harassment by thugs.
Just as his mind was in turmoil, another heavy blow came from the business world.
Another of Harrison Industries‘ heavily invested, must–win overseas energy projects was, at the last minute, snatched away again by Ashworth Corporation with an incredibly precise bid and a flawless risk–aversion plan.
Theodore studied the Ashworth proposal carefully. The cunning angle, the almost obsessive attention to detail, and the style of taking calculated risks that wer sure to pay off… it was identical to the occasional flashes of brilliance in the suggestions Evelyn used to make.
This time, he was almost certain that Evelyn’s hand was behind it.
She wasn’t just living her life, she was, in her own way, declaring war on him. Getting her revenge.
However, upon realizing this, Theodore didn’t feel anger. Instead, a twisted, almost perverse excitement and hope surged from deep within him.
She still cared about him! She hated him, which is why she was opposing him at every turn. Hate was the opposite of love, which meant she still had him in her
heart.
The thought thrilled him. He had to see her. Immediately. Right now!
He was no longer content with secret investigations and waiting. He decided to go to Ashworth Corporation himself, under the pretext of discussing a minor collaboration, but really, just to see her.
A few days later, Theodore, accompanied by his assistant, appeared in a conference room at the Ashworth Corporation headquarters.
On the Ashworth side, several executives and project managers were there to meet them. Halfway through the negotiation, the conference room door opened. and a slender yet poised figure walked in.
It was Evelyn.
she was wearing a sharply tailored, dark grey business suit, her long hair impeccably tied back, revealing a smooth forehead and a long, elegant neck.
She wore light, exquisite makeup. The former gentleness in her eyes was gone, replaced by a calm, confident, and even somewhat aloof and powerful aura.
She walked straight to the head of the table and sat down, giving a slight nod to the executives. When her gaze swept over Theodore, it didn’t pause for a moment, as if he were just another business competitor.
But Theodore’s heart began to pound wildly the moment she walked in.
