Chapter 3

A week later.

I started working at City General Hospital.

I’d studied medicine in college, then spent over two years at a medical research institute overseas.

But my parents were still worried.

I knew they had people watching me, and honestly, I wasn’t mad about it.

After all, Cole and Wren’s engagement couldn’t have any drama.

That would destroy our family.

I really wanted to tell them it would never happen. The old Iris was dead.

This Iris didn’t love Cole Nash anymore.

What I didn’t expect was Wren booking an appointment with me just a few days into my job.

We sat across from each other, the air thick with awkwardness.

She said she had a cough, but looking at her barely–there symptoms, I knew she wasn’t here as a patient. She was here for me.

I wrote her a simple prescription.

She clutched the paper but didn’t leave.

Then she took off her sunglasses.

“Iris, you look skinny.”

I didn’t want anything to do with that old crowd anymore.

Especially not Wren. We’d once loved the same man.

And I’d lost spectacularly.

I dodged her comment, keeping my tone flat.

“Pharmacy’s on the first floor. I need to see my next patient.”

She still didn’t leave, just stared at me.

“You seem different. Like, completely different.”

“You used to be the most outgoing one in our group. Never this quiet.”

I smiled slightly.

Chapter 3

“Miss Shaw, are you here for medical care or something else?”

She went quiet.

Put her sunglasses back on and left.

But as she opened the door to leave, I glanced down at her feet.

Three years ago, when she fell down those stairs, her leg was badly injured. Multiple surgeries.

So much blood.

That’s how I got blamed for everything.

Only the two of us were upstairs that day.

I kept insisting she’d fallen on her own.

Nobody believed me.

Cole had scooped her up, heartbroken.

“Cole, I didn’t push her.”

I’d tried desperately to explain, but before I could finish, he kicked me hard in the stomach.
