Stories That Never Slept by Elvo Ryn 23
Chapter 4
I saw Cole Nash again at a bar.
It was a department party from the hospital.
Our private room happened to be right next to his group.
Dr. Rodriguez had been drinking and saw Wren walking by in the hallway. He asked for her number.
Wren slapped him across the face.
That slap brought everyone from both rooms into the hallway.
In the crowd, I immediately spotted Cole as people automatically stepped aside for him.
Wren rushed straight into his arms.
“Cole, this creep was hitting on me.”
Dr. Rodriguez tried to defend himself.

fine, but you can’t just slap people.”
The department head finally recognized who we were dealing with and quickly grabbed Rodriguez.
“Shut up. Do you have any idea who this is? This is Cole Nash, CEO of Nash Industries.”
“Apologize to Mrs. Nash right now.”
The scolding sobered Rodriguez up a bit.
But he was still too young and naive.
Still trying to defend himself.
“Mr. Nash, I don’t think I need to apologize. I didn’t hurt your wife. I didn’t lay a finger on her. I swear, I’m telling the absolute truth.”
I gripped my hands tighter.
Rodriguez had completely lost his mind.
He had no idea that every word he spoke could cost him dearly.
“Really? So you’re saying Wren is lying about you?”

Cole’s eyes narrowed slightly.
The aura radiating from him made everyone back away.
Nobody in the entire hallway dared to move.
“Stop standing there like an idiot and apologize!”
The department head scolded Rodriguez again, then groveled to Cole.
“Mr. Nash, he’s fresh out of school. Doesn’t know any better.”
But Rodriguez, for some reason, refused to back down and wouldn’t apologize.
“Take him to our room.”
Cole tilted his chin, instructing the men beside him.
“What are you… what are you doing?”
“Let me go.”
“This…”
Less than a minute later, we heard the dull sounds of fists hitting flesh from inside.
And Rodriguez’s agonized screams.
The department head panicked.
But still couldn’t stop what was happening to Rodriguez.
Everyone else just kept their heads down, trying to stay invisible.
Who would dare offend the biggest businessman in the city, Cole Nash?
Rodriguez had helped me with paperwork when I started.
I felt sorry for him, but looking at the situation, there was nothing I could do.
But then something I didn’t expect happened.
Cole let go of Wren, glanced at me,
and walked over.
Stared at me intently.
“Iris, tell me what really happened.”
For a moment, I didn’t understand what he meant.
But I still believed Rodriguez and wanted to try to save him.
“Mr. Nash, I believe what Rodriguez said. He already got slapped. He doesn’t need to apologize anymore.”
After I spoke, I felt sweat beading on my forehead.

Until he smiled coldly.
I thought he might actually listen.
Instead, he said something else entirely.
“Iris, you put him up to harassing Wren, didn’t you? You haven’t changed at all. Still scheming to hurt people.”
“If we hadn’t been here today, what would your drunk colleague have done to Wren? Were you planning to destroy her?”
My brain completely shut down for a moment.
Not only didn’t he believe me, he actually thought I was behind it!
He got so close that his intimidating presence made me unsteady on my feet.
“Mr. Nash, you’re joking. I wouldn’t dare.”
I barely managed to stay standing, forcing a bitter smile.
But he still wouldn’t let up.
His piercing stare made my whole abdomen go numb and cold.
“You wouldn’t dare? Three years ago you pushed someone down the stairs. Now you put on this innocent act and think you can fool everyone?”
He pressed my head against the wall with one hand.
I couldn’t move.
My colleagues were terrified.
When the department head tried to step forward, Cole snapped at him.
“Get lost.”
Nobody dared approach after that.
I looked back at those familiar faces, and just like three years ago when Cole had kicked me to the ground, they wore the same satisfied, superior expressions.
I stared at the man in front of me who seemed ready to kill me, who hated me to his core.
Suddenly I felt so tired.
I shrugged and laughed.
Might as well own it.
“Yeah, Mr. Nash, it was me. So stop beating Rodriguez. Beat me instead. Let him out and take me in there. Beat me to death.”
I got more and more worked up.
Rodriguez’s screams were getting worse and worse.
I don’t know where I found the courage.

I looked straight into his eyes.
“Did you hear me? I said it was me. Come at me instead. Ilit me with those fists.”
I was clearly furious, like an angry little wildcat, but tears kept falling traitorously down my
cheeks.
However, my provocation didn’t work.
Rodriguez got beaten up pretty badly.
