But the room was already empty.
He grabbed a passing nurse by the arm and demanded harshly, “The patient in this room, where is she? What kind of hospital are you retiring here that you can’t even keep an eye on one patient! She’s so weak, if something happens to her, are you prepared to take responsibility for in
The young nurse was clearly startled and rushed to explain.
“Mr. Blackwood, please, calm down. Ms. Sullivan was already discharged this afternoon.”
A terrible, sickening premonition began to rise from the pit of Ryan’s stomach.
He didn’t have time to think. He raced downstairs, hailed a cab and rushed home.
On the way, Ryan dialed Chloe’s number over and over again.
But every single time, all he heard was the cold, automated voice on the other end telling him the number was unavailable.
He didn’t dare let his mind wander down that dark path, and could only urge the driver to go faster.
A small, desperate flicker of hope still lingered in his heart.
Maybe Chloe’s phone was dead, or maybe she was just so angry that she was deliberately ignoring his calls.
But all of that fragile hope evaporated the moment he walked in and saw the empty, strangely unfamiliar rooms.
He searched the entire apartment, but there was no sign of Chloe. Even her documents, all of her personal belongings, everything was gone.
Except for the new souvenirs in the living room cabinet, the entire place had been scrubbed clean of any trace that she had ever lived there.
No, wait, that wasn’t right.
A wave of utter despair washed over Ryan’s eyes.
The souvenirs that held all their beautiful memories, the real ones, had already been smashed to pieces by Jessica.
These new ones had nothing to do with Chloe at all.
He couldn’t hold it in anymore. He smashed the glass of the cabinet with his bare fist and utterly destroyed everything inside.
Finally, Ryan collapsed to his knees amidst the wreckage, completely and utterly defeated.
He couldn’t understand how things had gotten to this point.
At first, he hadn’t been moved by Jessica’s advances in the slightest. In fact, he’d been disgusted by them.
But as time went on, a complicated, unfamiliar feeling began to grow in his heart. He couldn’t understand how someone could be rejected so many times and still love him so unconditionally.
He started to notice Jessica, almost unintentionally.

He even started to respond to her occasionally.
Until that birthday party, when Jessica had made him choose between her and Chloe, and for the very first time, he had chosen her.
She had cried in his arms for a long time that day.
Somehow, he had suddenly felt a pang of pity for her. And then, when the doctor told him Jessica had a mental illness, his guilt had led him to make one wrong decision after another.
But he had never, not for a single second, wanted to actually divorce Chloe.
He had already made up his mind that as soon as Jessica’s condition showed any sign of improvement, he would go right back to Chloe.
Why couldn’t she have just waited for him a little longer?
Ryan covered his face in despair.
Fat, hot tears streamed down through his fingers and dripped onto the floor.
Just then, he heard the sound of a key in the lock. Through the dim light, he could vaguely make out a slender, feminine silhouette.
Ryan rushed over and recklessly pulled the person into a desperate embrace.
His voice was raspy to the point of breaking. “You came back. I’m so sorry, I know I was wrong. Please, don’t leave me, okay?”
Feeling the man’s trembling hand pressed against her back.
A flash of delighted surprise crossed Jessica’s eyes.
She wrapped her arms around him tightly. “Okay. I’ll never leave you.”
As soon as he recognized the voice, Ryan’s entire body went rigid. He then shoved her away with all his might.
