He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 14

"Stop throwing these childish tantrums. Think things through before you bring up divorce. I'll give you three days!" Yardley's face was rigid with fury. He spun around and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

The deafening bang startled the sleeping baby, and her piercing cries instantly echoed through the apartment. From the moment he walked in until he left, he hadn't even thought to glance at his daughter. He had stormed out forgetting there was even a newborn in the house.

Scarlett bit down hard on her lower lip, the hatred in her eyes deepening as agony tore through her chest.

That night, she tossed and turned, completely unable to sleep. In the early hours of the morning, she got up twice to nurse her baby.

At dawn, sporting heavy, dark circles under her eyes, she struggled out of bed with an aching body. Suddenly, the room spun violently. Losing all control, she collapsed toward the floor.

"Scarlett!"

Talia had just pushed the door open. Seeing her friend fall, she let out a panicked gasp and rushed forward to catch her. "Oh my god, you look awful! Zara said Yardley came over last night? Did that bastard set you off again?"

Scarlett groggily opened her eyes. It felt as though a thousand Talias were spinning in front of her. "Talia... I'm so dizzy."

"Hang on, I'm taking you to the hospital." Frantic, Talia practically dragged her up. Finally deciding to just carry Scarlett on her back, she somehow managed to wrestle her into the car. Speeding all the way to the hospital, Scarlett was rushed into the ER once again.

Talia stared at the closed emergency room doors, sick with worry. This foolish girl must have completely exhausted herself during her pregnancy, draining her body to the breaking point.

Scarlett had always had a weak constitution since childhood, falling seriously ill at least once a year. Talia had accompanied her on countless hospital trips. Yet, Scarlett always tried to act tough, gritting her teeth through the worst pain. When they were young, she wouldn't tell her mother when she was sick; she'd only ever lean on Talia. Now she finally had a husband, but he was a heartless jerk. When disaster struck, it was still her best friend who had to carry the burden.

Scarlett had suffered from severe vertigo since she was little, and this was another flare-up. The doctor was an acquaintance. He examined her, prescribed some medication, and set her up with an IV drip in a private room.

Talia was supporting Scarlett as they walked toward the ward when a scene down the hall made them freeze in their tracks. Talia rubbed her eyes in disbelief, double-checking. Yes, it was definitely Yardley.

Sylvia had come in for an IV due to a fever, and Yardley was personally supporting her every step of the way, even though she had two nannies trailing right behind her.

"That absolute bastard! He neglects his own wife, but bends over backwards for someone else's?" Talia swore loudly, completely out of patience.

She made a beeline toward them, but Scarlett yanked her back. Talia was baffled. "Scarlett, you're not going to tear him a new one?"

Talia's blood was boiling. As an outsider, she was being driven insane by Yardley's garbage behavior, let alone her precious Scarlett! They said women were at their most vulnerable during the first three years of motherhood... It couldn't be more true. Talia looked at her best friend with aching sympathy, shaking her head.
