Every nerve in Corinne's body instantly pulled taut.
Sylvia lowered her eyes, a wronged expression painting her features. "Scarlett tricked me into her room and baited me. In a fit of anger, I said some things I shouldn't have... I'm so worried."
"What shouldn't you have said? What exactly did you tell her?" Corinne's gaze sharpened, her voice pitching higher.
Panicked, Sylvia grabbed onto Corinne's sleeve. "It... it was nothing, just some words to intentionally piss her off. Aunt Corinne, I'm married to Julian now, and I just had his son. Whatever happened between Yardley and me back then was just youthful ignorance. I don't feel that way anymore. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
Corinne's tense posture relaxed slightly, and she squeezed Sylvia's hand. "I'm relieved to hear you say that. You and Yardley might not be blood-related, but to the rest of the world, you're cousins. We absolutely cannot afford any more gossip..."
Sylvia looked even more pathetic. "But Scarlett is so jealous right now. I'm terrified she'll use the recording to claim there's something going on between Yardley and me..."
Unable to take it anymore, Corinne shot up from her chair. "Where is she? I'm going to see her right now! If she dares to stir up trouble, I won't let her get away with it!"
A fleeting glint of triumph flashed in Sylvia's eyes before she quickly provided Scarlett's room number. Fueled by righteous fury, Corinne stormed out of the room without another word.
