In the past, no matter where she was or what she was doing, Scarlett would answer Corinne's calls before the third ring. But this time, it barely rang once before an automated voice chimed in. "Sorry, the number you have reached is unavailable. Please try again later..."
The immediate beep that followed made it perfectly clear: she had been blocked.
Corinne trembled with rage. "Yardley, look at this! What kind of woman did you marry? How dare she block me? Where is she? I need to find her and teach her a lesson right now!"
"Aunt Corinne, please don't be mad," Sylvia said softly. "Scarlett might just be dealing with postpartum depression. Otherwise, she wouldn't have slapped me over a dozen times."
Corinne's eyes went wide. "What did you say? She slapped you over a dozen times? Sylvia, your mother and I have pampered you your entire life. We've never even laid a finger on you, and she dared to hit you?"
Sylvia sniffled, looking thoroughly wronged. "Forget it. She's family, after all. I..."
Corinne completely lost it, pacing furiously around the hospital room. "You treat her like family, but what does she think of you? This is absolutely outrageous! Yardley, what do you even see in a woman like that? If you ask me, you should just divorce her!"
Yardley shot her a warning glare, his voice chillingly low. "Mom, that's enough."
Corinne's brow twitched. "She wouldn't dare! You and Yardley are completely innocent..." She stopped mid-sentence, looking at Sylvia with sudden suspicion. "What recording? Does she know something? Did you slip up?"
Sylvia had grown up in the Flynn family. Outsiders might not know about the scandalous history between her and Yardley, but Corinne was painfully aware of every detail. Corinne didn't care what Scarlett thought; she was terrified of what the Croft family would think if they found out.
The Croft family was a top-tier dynasty in Bay City, deeply rooted in old money, with unparalleled wealth, power, and influence. Sylvia joining the Croft family was a point of pride for both the Flynns and the Stetsons. If any rumors about her and Yardley leaked, even baseless ones, it would be devastating to the reputations of all three families.
