"Yes, Mrs. Quinn," Zelie and Wendy agreed politely as they quickly dressed Dawn in a fresh outfit.
Corinne eagerly took Dawn into her arms. Staring down at the baby's little face, her eyes finally held a hint of the warmth a grandmother should have.
"This little sweetie... if only she was this well-behaved all the time."
"Come on, be a good girl. Can you say 'Grandma'?"
Corinne cooed, unable to resist poking Dawn's soft cheeks, her long acrylic nails brushing dangerously close to the baby's delicate skin.
Yardley cringed at the sight, but seeing how genuinely fond his mother seemed of Dawn, he bit his tongue and quietly watched from the sidelines.
Not long after her bath, Dawn fell fast asleep. Yardley let out a long breath of relief and carefully carried her back to his room.
Propping himself up on one arm, he lay beside her, quietly gazing at her rosy little face. The longer he looked, the more his heart swelled with affection. He didn't even want to go to sleep.
If only Scarlett wasn't so dead set on fighting me, he thought. What a happy family we could be.
A wave of profound melancholy washed over him. He let out a heavy sigh, and after a while, he drifted into a hazy slumber.
Perhaps it was knowing his daughter was right beside him, but Yardley slept deeper than he had in a very long time.
He slept so heavily that he didn't hear Dawn's soft, uncomfortable whimpering in the middle of the night. He didn't realize that the tiny infant beside him was burning up, radiating heat as a severe fever took hold.
It wasn't until early the next morning when Corinne cheerfully knocked on his door, eager to see her granddaughter, that they realized something was terribly wrong.
The moment Corinne touched the baby, she gasped. Dawn's forehead was hot enough to fry an egg, her entire little body burning, her face flushed a deep, unnatural red.
"Yardley! Wake up! This is bad—she's burning up!"
"Hurry! Find a thermometer, right now!"
