Seeing that the two men were practically inches from throwing punches, Gordon quickly stepped in.
"Yardley, you're being completely paranoid. First you suspected me, and now Julian? We're just trying to support Scarlett as friends. There's nothing going on between—"
"Right," Yardley interrupted with a dark, bitter laugh. "You're all treating Scarlett like a dear friend, and treating me like an enemy. How else am I supposed to view this?"
Gordon was speechless.
Scarlett glared at Yardley. "Enough! This is between you and me. Stop dragging other people into this."
"I am asking you one final time: are you giving my daughter back or not? If you don't, whatever happens next is on your head."
Looking at the absolute hatred in Scarlett's eyes, Yardley felt something inside him begin to crack.
He could tell she had been up all night. Her eyes were bloodshot, her lips pale... part of him desperately wanted to soften, to comfort her.
But if he gave in now, what about the future?
No. I can't be soft. If he yielded today, he and Scarlett would truly have no future left.
A man had to stand his ground. He had to see this through to the end.
Hardening his heart, Yardley forced the sympathy down and stared directly into her eyes.
"And I already told you, I want to keep my daughter for a few days. Is that really such an unreasonable request? Do you have to fight me on absolutely everything?"
"You need to understand, Scarlett, she is not your personal property. She is our child. I have the right to take care of her too!"
Scarlett's face froze over entirely.
A suffocating mix of rage and disgust built up in her chest. He knew better than anyone how much Dawn meant to her. When their daughter was born, the Flynn family hadn't even bothered to look at her. They had neglected her entirely.
But now, when their marriage was ending, he was suddenly playing the role of the devoted father.
