He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 5

Seeing Scarlett remain silent, he reached across the table and affectionately rubbed her ear. "You never used to be like this, Scarlett. Don't go copying those tacky women who think pushing out a baby gives them a free pass to control their husbands."

Yardley was so used to being at the top that his tone was perpetually arrogant and condescending.

Scarlett used to genuinely admire and respect him, never finding it inappropriate. But today, those words grated painfully on her ears.

The anger simmering in her gut flared up violently. Scarlett slammed her silverware down onto the dining table with a sharp smack. "Yardley, do you even hear yourself talking?"

Seeing her temper flare, Yardley's face immediately darkened. "I'm holding onto my patience talking to you right now, Scarlett. I haven't even brought up the fact that you slapped me in public."

Yardley stood up, his chest heaving heavily, clearly unable to suppress his own anger any longer.

Scarlett let out a cold laugh. "Let's get a divorce, Yardley. Looking at you right now, I feel nothing but utter disgust."

"Scarlett!" Yardley was absolutely furious. "You want to divorce me right after having a daughter? Since when did you become like those tacky women, tossing the word divorce around over every little thing?"

Scarlett stared at Yardley, her gaze as cold as ice. "Oh, so you do know you just had a daughter? I thought your head was so full of another man's son that you completely forgot your own child existed!"

Yardley froze, as if finally remembering that he did indeed have a daughter. He glanced around, instinctively looking for her.

Seeing his delayed reaction, Scarlett felt a sharp sting in her eyes and laughed bitterly. "Don't bother looking. From pregnancy to birth, to her one-month milestone, you haven't asked about her once. Just pretend she doesn't exist. From now on, she's my daughter alone, and she has nothing to do with you."

"Once we're divorced, you can go dote on whoever's kid you want. But my daughter? Yardley Flynn, don't you dare lay a finger on her."

The memories hit her all at once.

The violent morning sickness of her first trimester.

The sheer terror of sitting alone in the doctor's office, listening to the potential risks.

The agonizing leg cramps and swollen feet during her third trimester.

The stretch marks scarring her stomach because she was too exhausted from working for his company to apply lotion.

The helpless desperation of lying alone on the delivery bed.
